I also have great memories from neighborhood sporting events. I don't think these types of events happen these days because I think it is just a sign of the times. We played cricket often with national players who had houses that backed onto the sports field. Players you saw on tv you were now playing with and knew very well which made it even more memorable.

oh I can't say that this was true with any of us. I did play on the football team for a year in high school with a guy who went pro in the NFL, then got injured and cut, lost all his money, then went to prison for stealing credit cards from people at the gym he worked at. That's not really the same thing is it?
Not quite lol. I think it was just where we lived we had so many top sports people living backing onto this school field. The one year I was asked to go to practice with them to help them prepare for an upcoming international game.
when you helped them did you quickly realize that they were on a totally different level as far as ability was concerned?
They needed to prepare for the West Indies team who had some world class fast bowlers and I had to help by doing throw downs. Basically you stand about 8 m away and throw the ball as hard as you can into the ground in front of them so that it travels past them at head height. This was more about preparing a technique to combat hostile bowling. It must have helped because one of them went on to top score in the match.
I don't think that thought about ability was even considered because as a kid you always rated yourself anyway or I did and could just be down to cockiness. It is funny at that age you would believe in your ability.
