Yesterday evening I received a notification (i.e. mention) from Peak Genie because I subscribed to the "user testing" category in that app. It was a wish created by the Peak Open team to take a look and test their Peak Vault browser extension, which is (will be) an alternative to Hive Keychain. This is their wish if you want to take a look yourself.
So today, I did check out the Peak Vault extension for the first time. For the time being, there is only an extension for Firefox, with the Chrome one on its way, but that's fine with me since I use Firefox a lot.
I used a small test account I have, so I couldn't thoroughly engage with all the features of the extension because I didn't have all types of assets to play with.
Ok, this is going to sound like a bunch of things that are wrong or that can be improved, but that's what testing is about, in my opinion. Not to tell you what great things are. I focused more on the testing part and less on reviewing for others, but the main features that you'd expect are there. There is still work to be done on it, though.
I installed the extension twice. First time, I installed it, added the account, and started checking different features. At some point, I wanted to test the lock feature, which I did. Unfortunately, it seemed like my password (which was very simple) was... wrong. I tried disabling the extension and enabling it, but to no success. In the end, I reinstalled it and haven't had issues locking and unlocking it since. I have to assume this was my fault somewhere, the first time.
This is how the extension's main screen looks like, after you log in:
I couldn't test any of the NFT features, since I didn't have any on my test account, but it's great to find 3 games there, Splinterlands, RotP, and TerraCore. That's something Hive Keychain doesn't have, for example.
One big thing I noticed:
Couldn't Log into PeakD with Peak Vault
The screenshots will probably speak better:
Here's also the whitelisted ops for PeakD:
Whatever happened, that's all this error message said. Peak Vault displayed "success" into the extension window.
A List of Smaller Issues I Noticed
A few of these issues may simply be work in progress that hasn't been added yet, so they will be in the category of new features at a later time.
There we go:
- Takes too long to update the H-E balance of a token after a transfer; the user may think the transaction didn't go through and send again
- You can't stop an unstaking process in Hive-Engine from Peak Vault
- You can't remove a contact once added
- Web view menu option doesn't seem to work (maybe nothing there yet?)
- on the Hive staking page, the insufficient funds warning shows up even though you have both the Power Up and Power Down options on that page; that warning makes no sense on powering down.
That's about it I could test with that account, particularly since I couldn't log into PeakD to try some social stuff.
I hope it helps! Good luck developing it further! The NFTs section could become very nice to have in a browser extension.

Hey, Peak Vault's developer here. Thank you for testing! Feedback is invaluable!!
I wanted to address some of the issues you raised:
I agree with everything else you've pointed out and fixes are on their way! Thanks again!
I'm sorry you couldn't log into PeakD. I'd like to dig deeper into this. If you're available to help me out hit me up (or anyone else in the team) on Discord or on Sting.
OK, found it! Sorry for misreporting this. Pretty cool how you implemented this one!
Ok, a temporary solution is ok until a proper one is implemented.
I see. It's ok, I know these things take time.
I will do that, but probably not today since it's a very busy day for me. I tried again, and the error persists.
The inconsistencies might limit the usage. You know how people get tired of something not working as they want? But this is promising though.
Yes, I know. For a wallet, it needs to work flawlessly. And I can't say I discovered anything serious with it, other than I couldn't login to PeakD, which I'm sure it can be fixed relatively quickly and it might not even be from the extension, but from how it was integrated into PeakD.
Either way, it needs a lot of support to get integrated into various apps, or it will never reach the popularity of Hive Keychain.
I don't know about it either, I'm using the hyphen chain too, but if you mentioned it, I'll definitely try it.
It's still an early version. Don't expect it to be as feature complete or polished as Keychain.
I hope with some further development it improves. It sounds like it has some potential though!
For a first release without even any real funding it's pretty amazing though... right? Works pretty good on my end and I haven't had to use keychain on peakd.com since i installed it.
If it works for you to login to PeakD, then yep, I'd say it does a great job for a first release.
It does, for sure. They pushed this Contacts feature where you add people's names and the company they work for, along with their Hive and/or Discord usernames (a sort of online Rolodex). This can be useful to prevent typos when transferring funds and to remember who's who. Some people will love this.
I have never heard about this but Keychain is kind of great. I do like having alternatives but it does look like a lot of stuff needs work. If they can fix it, then it might be a good alternative for specific cases.
I had known about it because I am interested in what Peak Open develops, but haven't tried it until yesterday. Of course, as Jarvie said, it's a first release and they didn't get DAO funding for its development the full time, but I'm sure things can and will improve.
Oh, I didn't know about this. Seems like a work in progress but checking it out and giving it time! 🙂👌
Yep, it surely needs time to be a true alternative to Hive Keychain, but it's important for decentralization.
Yes agreed we have only one real wallet that real users can sign transactions on various websites
As you said in the Genie post, we love Keychain, but it's important to have viable alternatives.

I’m loving this and it has a very fantastic aim but there are more improvements which should be made
Kudos to the team!
