Thursday is attic art day and for Day 54 of The 100 Day Project I was planning on making a birthday card for John. I'd already played around with some ideas and had cut out a guitar from an old book to be the focal point.
However, when I was ready to start I couldn't find the guitar. I thought I'd probably hidden it under some papers so, if John came into the attic, he wouldn't see it but I couldn't remember where I'd put it.
On first look I couldn't find the guitar anywhere but the pile of paper on my table didn't make it easy to look, which led me to a massive clear up.
I decided to go through all my "cleaning up" papers, i.e. the place I wipe off my paint brushes, stencils etc. I was determined to be quite picky about what I would keep and mostly tore off the bits that were most interesting rather than keeping the whole sheet.
Here's an example. This sheet was really grungy and not likely to be improved.
I tore out the bits I liked, threw most of the sheet away and ended up with just these pieces.
I worked my way through the whole pile, tearing and sorting as I went and filling up a big rubbish bag.
These are the torn pieces I kept. Not sure how I'll use them but I'm more than pleased with how much I disposed off and with the potential of the bits I kept.
My desk ended up looking like this.
These are the papers that still have potential to be developed further.
It was another gratifying clutter busting day but, sadly, I still haven't found the guitar.
Looks like I'm going to have to come up with another idea.

I thought you were after a real guitar :) Always best to keep your workspace tidy.
We have 3 guitars in the house and, not surprisngly, I know where they all are.
Your "before" desk photo made me laugh !
In a good way that is.
What a task. I know you are glad to have it done. So far, if I have a blotty paper/brush cleaning paper that does in the end has no redeeming qualities, I have just stenciled a design over what is there to change it altogether to save it. Of course, you have been in it for a long time and have more hanging around than I do, so it is easy for me to do that at this time.
I hope you find your guitar !
I've looked everywhere I can think of for the guitar but still no luck.
Sorting through that mass of papers was a fun project and, as always, the sorting/reducing feels really good.
Did you look in all the books?....... LOL... just trying to help from far away.
I looked in my altered book and the 2 I have on the table for cleaning brushes etc. I have tons of books in the attic but I wouldn't have hidden it in the ones on the shelves.
I looked in the card drawer and on my desk. I just can't imagine where else I would have put it. The paper pile was the most obvious place. 🤷♀
I had it a couple of days ago.
ohh nice and messy!
I think you mean . . .
ohh nice and tidy! 😁
I was thinking papier mache! 😁
Yeah. I've been thinking about paper mache recently, as a way to use up some of the hundreds of book pages I have. But then I'd just be stuck with a load of paper mache projects cluttering up the space. 😂
I was thinking saleable items.
Mind you, the one time I made papier mache vases with pressed flowers in the varnish, it took soooooooooooooooooooooooo long.
I've got no shortage of saleable items I could make or even the nice vinatge linens I have or ephemera packs. Junk journals are good sellers and I enjoy making them but the people that sell seem to have very active youtube channels.
Making the stuff is the easy part but finding people to sell them to without doing a lot of work/social media etc would be the challenge.
Around here, we call it "starting the Black Hole Clock" when we start looking for something put in "a perfectly reasonable and safe place" to use later... and we have no idea where it actually is.
Good luck on finding the guitar!
I've not heard that one before. Very apt. I looked everywhere I could think of and some places where I knew it was not going to be but still didn't find it. Seems like it really has disappeared down a black hole.
