Light at the End of the Tunnel

The week just gone by has been quite surreal following Cyclone ISSA, which has been relentless and caused much destruction and death, with many people still missing.

It really feels like we've been watching a horror movie, except that we were part of that movie!

Is the storm nature's way of saying enough is enough?

Our Burning Planet, a project of The Daily Maverick, warns that we are to expect extreme weather and climate change more often, and sooner than expected.

Why are we only now waking up and realizing that we have not taken care of Mother Nature as our forefathers did?

However, right now in our nick of the woods, following a harrowing week, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as I saw this morning when our loyal Bongikosi and I took a walk down our dead-end road.
He refused to go home for the Easter weekend as usual, as he wanted to be with us in case of more storms; but thankfully the cyclone moved up the coast, away from us!

20220417_120513.jpg

Even though a section of the road is down to a single lane, residents who live past the obstacle caused by the massive mudslide, can once again use their cars and go about their daily lives as normal as possible, under the circumstances!

20220417_120217.jpg

I was shocked to see the extent and size of the crater left at the source of the mudslide; this goes way down below to the road level. It is going to take some careful planning by engineers to reinstate the bank safely. As my friend said, if this is not done correctly by the time they rebuild their home, it would be like walking into a lion's den!

Let's hope this has been a wake-up call for the authorities and for us as residents not to sit back, but to voice our concerns when we see property improvements being done irresponsibly.
Lax building techniques and extreme weather conditions is a recipe for disaster!

This storm, however, has taught us many lessons as we've been left without basics we take for granted, but now realize just how we've been wasting the most precious life-giving resource and that is water, which however can also turn into a destructive force, as we saw this week!

It's all about balance, but that sadly has been disturbed by the people of our planet!

We however will continue looking for that light at the end of the tunnel, be thankful for small mercies, and as Silvery folk still do our little bit to help heal our burning planet!

Happy Easter to all my friends who celebrate this special day!

Consciousness of the Earth degradation should be awaking again. Our activities has been the main cause of this and if we keep on destroying our habitat it's will be difficult for the next generation to survive here on earth. My counsel is that let everyone takes care of their part on earth preservation through going green as much as you can

You're so right, if each one of us can take responsibility for our little part of the world, we can hopefully bring about some changes!
Thank you for these words of wisdom!

I have been going on about the destruction of nature for ages, but it's like talking to a brick wall.
People don't realize the folly of their ways, as if you clear one forest for development it will affect other areas. Every wetland that is destroyed will cost us and the noxious gasses that we happily pump into the air will come back to haunt us. Not even to talk about the pollution of the rivers and the ocean.
This is only beginning.

I echo every word you say @papilloncharity, but greed will not stop the destruction of forests, and those gases being pumped into the air also!

This is only beginning.

Sadly this is so true!
I hope you're better now my friend?

And I also agree with you Lady @lizelle, it is not going to end.

I am struggling a bit, but such is life my friend and I am used to it.

We on this earth are in a mess, and I don’t know the answer.
I try my best to respect nature and do what I can to help, but it surely is an uphill battle.
I pray for your strength to endure these hardships.
Be well , stay safe and keep fighting, my prayers are with you 🙏

Thank you so much @farm-mom, it's my friends and neighbors who I'm really concerned about! The reality is really hitting them now as it's not simply a case of rebuilding their homes, it's to get the authorities to reinstate the banks in a responsible manner to prevent a repeat of this!

Hi Lizzie!
Good to hear that the cyclone has moved away. Let's hope authorities and citizens heed these calls of nature. Here 20 years ago, there was a tragedy caused by some mudslides with a lot of material and human losses. Unfortunately, little was learned from that terrible episode, and we can only pray that something like this does not happen again. I hope that in your case the lesson will be learned. I'm glad that there is light at the end of the tunnel. And I hope that in the next few days your neighbors and all those who were affected by the tragedy can begin to recover.
Big hugs, Happy Easter.🤗😊

Hi Eli,
Thank you so much for your concern, and for doing such a sterling job with Silver Bloggers as I simply have not had the time to look at the writings of all our members!
Will we ever learn and more importantly, will the people in charge of infrastructure also start doing the right thing!
It's been heartwarming seeing how our community have banded together and helped those who've been affected by opening up school and community halls to feed and house the people.
A beeeg hug back to you as well, special lady, hope you're having a good Easter 🥰

Thank you, Lizzie. We spent Easter with the family and celebrating my son's birthday at the weekend.
I have always thought that tragedies bring out the best or the worst of who we are. And I'm glad there has been so much solidarity in your community.
Big hugs and take care. 🤗😊

Vaya, de una forma u otra, e gusta ese tipo de terrenos y paisajes.

We only see the tip of the iceberg alas, people in power don't want advice from public, will not listen!

Cheap housing, bad town planning, drains backed up with filth!

No comment, still raining down here now, at least the sun peeped out for a short while.

We have been destroying our planet for years, and just ignoring it and burying our heads in the sand.

Prince Charles has been ridiculed for talking about the devastation we are doing.
Do you know he first made a speech about the environment and the effects of pollution in February 1970 over 50 years ago!

Again in 2009 he said we had a 100 month window to change our ways before it is too late.
The damage has been done in my eyes and we are reaping what we sowed unfortunately.

We still have not learnt, wanting our holidays in foreign lands via plane, all the forests and green spaces being ruined and developed.

I am glad on a personal level that you are okay, and it is not pleasant living through disasters.

I was in a couple of hurricanes when I was living in Florida. Scary stuff and power and water outages are a pain but a reminder that a vast swathe of the world's population still lives like that on a daily basis.
