Title: Rascal the Rainbow Lorikeet
Medium: Colored pencils
Size: 12 x 16"
Year: 2017

Hi guys it's my first time posting in this community thanks to @gems.and.cookies (My father). He told me about it and I thought it would be super cool to share love for birds! I always draw birds for some reason, I love the detail and beauty in the feathers. They are soft and light yet they have claws which are sharp and hard and it is one of the contrasting traits of birds that I find fascinating. They are also very simple and innocent but are very great and deadly hunters (for raptors that is) but even a chicken can snag a fly with precision! Anyway let me share some work in progress pictures.

Steps explained:

The first step is to make a light sketch and erasing it until the lines become super faint and then layering and blending the colors. So what techniques do we use here? I can recommend [LEAVE OUT] method. This means leaving the paper blank where the lightest areas are or where light is reflected. Another is [CROSS HATCHING]. There are different types of shading but you can use these layering techniques before smudging or blending it with a pastel pencil or blending stump.

I usually start with the beak or nose of animals. I only draw freehand, no grid.

Next step is of course finishing the first layer with light shades before making it darker. So this is what it looks like.

MIDTONES
Here we use darker colors for a more solid and volumized look. Shading makes it look 3D. I colored the eyes and cerain parts of feathers with depth.

Even if to our eyes we see simple colors it is actually more than one color. So as you can see there are shades of pink and blue and purple applied on the beak when technically the beak is just yellow or orange. You can study the [COLOR THEORY] to understand pigment and hues better.

Fast Forward

Here is the final work!
I hope my simple tips can help spark some motivation and creativity.

Do any of you like rainbow lorikeets? If so, let me know!

This bird is my first drawing using my mitsubishi colored pencil set of 36 colors. This is sold already to my friend. I am still very happy with what I achieved.
Rainbow lorikeets remind of T-rex dinosaurs. They say they are very active, noisy and playful.

Self introduction

hello everyone my name is Jacinta. In the pic I am in the middle. This photo was taken in one of our art exhibit and workshops in our City by our all women's art group called [BAI HINANG]. These are my watercolor paintings of our live models. I have been making art since I was 18 (I am now 26). I took Fine arts for one year but I am now self taught and trying to master watercolor. My forte is dry media and sculpting but I am working on my wet media as of the moment.

My art is focused on wildlife and most importantly spiritual/religious art which are all so important to me. I share a lot of art on my blogs and on my instagram page. I am a freelance artist and I also do art as a hobby.

MY MESSAGE: Make Meaningful art!
