Small Not Insignificant Birds
Cape Sparrow is a local resident to South Africa vs House sparrow an invasive/imported species, both similar in size, regular visitors to most gardens throughout the land.
Cape sparrow (Passer melanurus), or mossie is a handsome brightly coloured sparrow. Male has distinguished black head and throat, striking crescent from eye to ear. Females with pale gray head, pale crescent similar shape to the males, they arrive in pairs or small flocks also enjoy natural or human residential habitat.
Nibbling off the grass chatting consistently is the Mossie, much loved with great story attached to the history of this local inhabitant.
House sparrow (Passer domesticus) a bird that arrived and thrived, introduced into our land from India in the 1880's, now found literally everywhere in Southern Africa close to human habitation. House Sparrows lack distinctive facial pattern of our Cape Sparrow, appears to have more Chestnut brown with gray crown, look similar not quite the same.
It matters not which sparrow species makes a visit, both are regular chatty fellows, not only living close to us humans but close to each other as well, always a pleasure to hear them going about their business throughout the day.
Nests often mean building up in the eaves of the house, finding the smallest area to climb in they will make themselves very much at home, one does need to keep an eye open not to have a home invasion.

Wonderful post, Joan. ❤
The Cape Sparrow is really more attractive. So nicely captured, both male and female.
This is an iteresting fact who imported the house sparrows in South Africa.
House sparrow found in almost every region of the world, sure they would have arrived on their own if not brought here... !LOLZ

I love the color of the birds, they are kind of earthly colors, especially in the last photo, which is my favorite.
Funny how we simply refer to them as a Mossie, yet there are a variety of species of Sparrows some prefer drier bushveld region.
Awesome post Joan, I never heard of Cape sparrow before!

Very distinguished little bird, the species tend to mix but not cross breed by what I understand.
Oh they are distinguished I agree with that!

What cute sparrows! Outwardly, they reminded me of linnet.
Looks similar, birds are fascinating when comparing similarities.
These are cute little birds. Nice captures, Joan. 🐦
All year round residents one normally does not notice them being a familiar sight.
