Shape And Size Brings Wings To Frolic In The Sky

5432-WhiteEye-StretcingWings.JPG

Cape white-eyes (Zosterops pallidus) 10 to 13 cm size has highest dispersal of all passerines, native to South African savannas, gardens also found in old-world tropic regions including Asia and Australia geographic variation is found.

Small, fast, social little birds usually seen in pairs during mating season, will move in hundreds together when on the move finding new areas to feed in.

5551-Terns.JPG

Sooty tern is apparently the most abundant tern with global population estimated around 15 million, patrol along our beaches one often sees them in flight or feeding close to the shoreline. Terns are more streamlined to gulls with shorter legs, forked tail.

Cape weaver (Ploceus capensis) a loud and proud flashy bird that lets one know they are around, very busy in building finding the right spot. Endemic to South Africa and Lesotho widely distributed in southwestern and central regions.

IMG_0612.JPG

Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) All eight species of vultures found in South Africa are critically endangered or like this one endangered. Big players in Africa's ecosystems removing decomposing carcasses, some areas are now safe zones for these large birds under protection. Having sighted them in the wild this one is is rehab which gave a superb opportunity of witnessing how massive the bird is.

Lesser Striped Swallow (Cecropis abyssinica) incoming from July to September head back northward during months of February to May. They fly in great numbers then disperse to nesting sites previously used, clean repair and lay clutch of two to four eggs, raise their young who start practicing flight just before they are three weeks old.

Flapping out of here myself, one bird going down to the river to overnight in the large trees, not sure which bird it is flying into the sunset, on that note I wish you wonderful times outdoors capturing birds in flight, wings we dream of possessing.

Beautiful photographs, I appreciate that you let us know about these beautiful specimens. Success in the contest
Have a beautiful morning

Most these photos over the last couple of weeks, not the best at them in flight going so fast overhead. Vultures are the only bird taken awhile ago, still flabbergasted at how large they are!

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful day !PIZZA

Ah! Those delightful (and underappreciated) vultures! That photo contrasted against the pink is something else

Hopping down the hill with azaleas in bloom was a great pairing in nature.

Definitely

Spread those wings!

These are awesome Joan and vultures are huge I know that!

Brilliant experience watching them vultures up close, against mountain peaks one cannot fathom their actual size.

Thanks for visiting, another golden sundown over here at the moment, have a wonderful evening.

Hello @joanstewart I have been willing to ask, did you study birds in collage? because you sure are vast when it comes to those creatures.

Life lessons from within the home and travel, another hobby I enjoyed long before I could afford a camera.

Ohhhhh I see, you sure are doing excellently well with this hobby of yours.

Something I have always enjoyed is learning about nature, always inspiring.

So nice to see these wings, small and big. 🙂
Vultures are so important and we also have endangered species. Some have gone south already, like the Egyptian vultures. I have to search some more info about the other vultures that migrate and how far they go.
I like that last photo too - the bird flying into sunset.
Beautiful entry, Joan! ❤

Have seen them in the wild circling and feeding from a distance, we have about eight varieties of vultures all on endangered lists.

Birds move between the rivers East/West, or inland down to the coast always lovely seeing them.

The vulture's pictures look very lovely; they are photos of a very beautiful place."

Rehab place is up in the mountains where they are allowed to stretch their wings to gain health back.

Woah! I never thought vulture are these big. I always have seen them in movies. But this one is I think biggest of all.

It is one of the larger ones we have over here, if you interested in African Vultures here is a link with photos and maps African Vultures

Woah. That cape vulture really scared me. It was written that it is the biggest one.

And one more thing, that Egyptian vulture was having a good look. More like a roaster. I never knew that vultures are also beautiful and also it wasn't a bald head.

Thanks Joanstewart. That was really informative.

Birds are beautiful in many ways doing their duty to keep ecosystems in balance. Glad you enjoyed the additional information on Vultures found in Africa.

doing their duty to keep ecosystems in balance

I strongly agree with this.

Thank you.

Wonderful photos of some of your amazing birds.

Wow you captured them all? Here I seldom captured birds because they will fly as soon as you will come closer to them.

Birds always on the move, not easy to capture them in flight with speed they pick up over our low lying hills, sometimes you get lucky!

Excellent selection! Birds in flight are wonderful photos.

Forever moving over my head by a foot or two, my reactions never fast enough to always capture them !LOLZ

Which is faster
hot or cold?, Hot, because you can easily catch a cold.

Beautiful and unique vultures I hope are safe even though animal carcasses are still disturbing

Cleaning dead animals is what they do best, keeps unwanted disease or worse out of the air.

That's right, my friend agrees all that for a clean environment

Happy healthy always friend

@Joanstewart

Thank you very much for visiting and support, have a nice day

Great shots especially the birds at a distance in the sky, that is the result of a quality camera. Always admired Lesotho from afar when the job took me to Zastron in the Free States those mountains are gorgeous.

!PIZZA

Many places in South Africa to enjoy mountains. Top of the ridge on Lesotho is relatively flat, approaching from the Orange Free State is easier than going up the mountain pass from KZN with extremely poor road!

Tell me about the poor road driving towards Lesotho, Zastron, even worse for us if the site is a farm, we sometimes do over 100km on unpaved roads. But I enjoyed every bit of the adventure.

Much of our driving in early years was on sand and rock, old sedan cars handled it well now most own big fancy vehicle we could never afford. Still go on dirt, very much slower as new vehicles are not really built to cope with conditions.

I almost rolled over the bakkie in Northan Cape and also got stuck in the sand also in Northan Cape but I got better at driving on dirt roads as I did more trips to farms.

Soft powder sand can be tricky, rocky roads always stand a chance of ripping tyres always good to learn to drive off road conditions living here.

Yes one of those skills I got from SA.

Love seeing the variety of birds in your area Joan. The vultures are a big bird.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

Always entertained by the bird life we have moving through the seasons. Thanks for visiting and have a good weekend.

Well i guess thats how the world is, its wide enough for everyone to explore without colliding with one another. Lovely capture on the birds

Plenty of space for everyone who is prepared to work.

Hahah yahh you got that right 😅😅 exactly
