Fill your backyard feeders with small, black oil sunflower seed and chances are this bird and all his friends will find you!

House Finches are native to the Southwest, but they are recent arrivals in the East. The birds were sold illegally by New York pet shop owners, and in 1940 they released their birds to avoid prosecution. The finches survived and flourished in the suburbs. 50 years later they had advanced across the continent, and can now be found from coast to coast.

I didn't know that they were pet store refugees until I was looking them up for this post. I knew they were not native to our part of the country, but I didn't know how they came to be here.
