The theme for @nelinoeva 's 45th SMAP contest this week is FLUFFED-UP Birds.
It hasn't been cold enough here yet this year for the birds to need to puff up to keep warm, but here is a photo of a female cardinal last winter on a bitter cold day.
We have been seeing huge flocks of migrating grackles the past few weeks. They don't migrate far. Grackles in the northern part of their range, the ones that spend the winter near me and in the southern part of Canada, will travel to the central and southern states.
One flock landed in my yard. There were hundreds of birds and they all went down and took a bath in the spring. They were so noisy that while we were outside watching and I was trying to get a few photos, my daughter and I could hardly hear each other talk.
Most of them were down in the water, but some stayed in the trees keeping lookout.
They didn't stay long, and when they left, en mass, it sounded like the whirring of helicopter blades!
It was quite an incredible experience to be so close to such a huge flock of birds.
I will look forward to seeing them again in the spring and wish them safe travels!

Wow those are lovely photos and there are lots of birds there which is amazing to see. I love to see different birds which not commonly seen here.
Thanks. Grackles are beautiful birds with shiny blue heads.
I'd love to see a cardinal one day in real life. You are so lucky.
Come visit! I can pretty much guarantee you a cardinal most mornings and evenings!
I was laughing at one yesterday evening who was sitting on top of a feeder that I have hanging from a long chain, and the feeder was swinging in the breeze, and the Cardinal was treating it as if she was sitting in a rocking chair and falling asleep as it rocked back and forth.
They are beautiful birds.
I hope to be able to do that one day. Alas the world we live in at the moment has me a prisoner of sorts in my country, fortunately it remains a beautiful country:)
Thanks Pix!

Hello dear friend @melinda010100 good afternoon
I would have loved to be at the back of your house when the band of birds arrived, that would have been very beautiful to hear their trills
I appreciate that you have let us know these beautiful images
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid night and a well-deserved rest
It was an amazing experience! There are too many trees in the way to get pictures of them in the water, but the splashing was incredible!

I do not know if it is grackles but a few days ago hundreds of birds landed in the trees by my house, I know what you mean about the noise. I live in Florida and have seen these same birds before but only in the winter.
We started out watching them through the window, and then decided to try to sneak outside to get a few pictures, but we soon realized we did not need to sneak! They were so loud that they wouldn't have heard the door slam. I'm sure we were being watched and were far enough away that they did not see us as a threat. It really was a memorable event!
These migration photos are beautiful. It is rare to see such photos, thanks for sharing
They certainly appeared to be having a good time together and had a lot to talk about! 😅
There are lot of beautiful birds and flocks. Looking so amazing
The water and trees in my yard attract many different birds. I love watching them.
Red Cardinal is a very beautiful bird!☺️
The males are stunning, but I really enjoy seeing the more subtlety colored females.
The invasion of the Grackles 😀
This must be really amazing to be so close to such a big flock.
It was pretty incredible! I'm quite thrilled I got to experience it.
