Conflict on the Havana coast, Brown pelicans in action [Eng/Esp].

Hello friends, greetings and blessings to all. Today I tell you one of the best experiences I’ve had photographing birds, it turns out that some time ago I overheard a conversation between several fishermen about the havoc being done by a group of pelicans on the outskirts of the city of Havana, in an area known as El Chivo beach, they complained that the birds had made their own team to steal their fish.

Hola amigos, saludos y bendiciones para todos. Hoy les cuento una de las mejores experiencias que he tenido fotografiando aves, resulta ser que hace un tiempo escuché casualmente una conversación entre varios pescadores sobre los estragos que estaban haciendo un grupo de pelicanos en las afueras de la ciudad de La Habana, en una zona conocida como Playa El Chivo, se quejaban ellos que las aves habían hecho su propio equipo para robarles los pescados.

That made me laugh at first, but obviously, I couldn’t help myself and went to investigate. Brown pelicans are imposing birds, large in size, sometimes trusting, mainly when they are interested in approaching for food, so I was not surprised that the whole story of the gang pelicans was true. El Chivo beach is outside the city, on the north coast and very close to Havana Bay. It is mostly frequented by fishermen, but it is a paradise for birds. Mainly migratory birds, there is an abundance of food and they find refuge there.

Aquello me causó risa al principio, pero como es obvio, no me pude contener y fui a investigar. Los pelicanos pardos son aves imponentes, de gran tamaño, a veces confiadas, principalmente cuando tienen interés de acercarse por temas de comida, así que no me extraño que toda la historia de los pelicanos pandilleros fuera cierta. La playa El Chivo está afuera de la ciudad, en la costa norte y muy cerca de la bahía de La Habana. Mayormente, quienes la frecuentan son pescadores, pero para las aves es un paraíso. Principalmente, las migratorias, hay abundancia de alimento y allí encuentran refugio.

I arrived early in the morning and looked for the best location to take pictures, near the fishermen and in the shade. Not 30 minutes passed and little by little the birds were appearing; they are really impressive, even from a distance. And what happened next is worthy of a Hollywood movie. Several jumped on the fish and fought to the death like boxers; on the other hand, the fishermen tried to scare them off, but in vain.

Bien temprano llegue y busqué la mejor ubicación para hacer las fotos, cerca de los pescadores y a la sombra. No pasaron 30 minutos y poco a poco iban apareciendo las aves; realmente son imponentes, aún a la distancia. Y lo que aconteció después es digno de una película de Hollywood. Varios se lanzaron sobre los peces y pelearon a muerte como boxeadores; por otro lado, los pescadores tratando de asustarlos, pero en vano todos los esfuerzos.

In the middle of the food fight was me with my camera, not wanting to miss even the smallest detail. In the distance one of the fishermen shouted at me: photographer, help us chase them away, ha, ha, ha, ha. Anyway, those birds left the place well fed, and I, happy with the photos I had gone out to look for, the most harmed were the fishermen who had to return home empty-handed.

En medio de la pelea alimenticia estaba yo con la cámara, no queriéndome perder ni el más mínimo detalle. A lo lejos uno de los pescadores me gritaba: fotógrafo, ayúdanos a ahuyentarlos, ja, ja, ja. En fin, aquellas aves salieron bien alimentadas del lugar, y yo, feliz con las fotos que había salido a buscar, los más perjudicados fueron los pescadores que tuvieron que regresar a casa con las manos vacías.
