European Green Woodpecker

in Feathered Friends5 years ago

I have collected many photos of birds during my walks. One of the most successful were the images of the Green woodpecker. I encountered this amazing bird in out local park once or twice. It happened quickly and I haven't got good enough images. Unlike the green woodpecker, we see much more offten the Syrian woodpecker. However while I was admiring the roses in the Sea Garden I heard nearby some noise that appeared to be from a bunch of little birds, I suspect great tit or blue tit and while I was looking for them, I was surprised by this beauty - the European green woodpecker.

This is my favourite photo, the bird watching straight, like it was saying - hey, what are you looking at?

I was happy that the woodie decided to pose and let me make so many photos.

The bird is large with red crown and black around the eyes and the beak. The male has red stripe, like moustache. This one is female as it hasn't. Actually it has something like a black moustache.

The Green woodpecker spends much time on the ground, because their diet includes ants.

This time the bird was eager to fly around on different trees after standing on the ground just for a little while.

I am sure the woodpecker did not mind my presence.

Well, the bird gave me that look.

I must have been interesting for the bird, making clicking noise with the camera.

I could not have enough and kept on shooting.

I hope this series of photos did not get you bored. To end let me show some gifs.

One of the coolest experiences I have had was finding a woodpecker nest in an old apple tree. It was literally, IN the apple tree. The bird had created a hollow space in the trunk and made the nest in there.

It is amazing how the woodpeckers made their nests and pecked so deep in the trunk of the tree.
Other birds, like starlings take adavntage and occupy the woodpeckers nest.

Why it looks like a Viking woodpecker to me haha! Loved visiting here.

😀 That is interesting comparison. 😀

What a gorgeous bird! Your photos are stunning and how nice of her to be so cooperative. I am so glad that you were able to get so many photos. I feel like I had an opportunity to get to know her. Thanks for posting these to Feathered Friends! !tip

I was so delighted to spend some time with this really amazing and gorgeous woodpecker. I could make even more photos, risking to fill the memory card. 😀
