On the way to the forest, we have a small park. It stretches along the river bank. Its width is small but rather long. The place is quiet and located far from highways. The park path is popular with athletes and cyclists. A lot of people come here just to walk along the river. In this winter season, when the river is covered with ice, there are many who like to ski on the icy surface of the river.
You can always meet various birds in this park. It's winter now, it's cold. There is already a thick layer of snow on the ground. Birds find it difficult to find food for themselves. There are many kind people who come to this park to feed the birds living there. I, too, when I go to the forest, I always take pieces of bacon with me. People hung many bird feeders on the branches. I have a few favorite places. I always leave food for the birds there. Sometimes I am lucky to see birds that come for food. Today I was lucky to see a woodpecker.
It all happened quite unexpectedly. I just finished pouring seeds into the feeders and hung pieces of unsalted bacon on the knots. He moved away from the feeders a few steps. Suddenly a woodpecker landed on the snow right next to me. I was not at a loss and immediately prepared my camera. I tried not to make sudden movements. Someone dropped a small piece of bread on the ground and the woodpecker became interested. It was cold and the bread was already frozen. The woodpecker sat down next to him and began to hammer him with its beak.
He managed to pull out the bread from the snow compacted by his feet. He laid it at his feet and continued his work. Apparently he was very hungry and therefore did not pay attention to me. I also tried not to move so as not to frighten him.
The slice of bread was quickly finished. The woodpecker began to look for food on the ground. Nearby, someone poured small pieces of bread on the ground and the woodpecker turned his attention to them.
He grabbed the largest piece of bread and quickly flew with it onto a tree branch. There he pressed it to a branch with his paws and began to gouge it with his beak and pinch off small pieces. It is a pity it was impossible to photograph him. There were a lot of small branches around and it was hard to see it. But still I was very pleased.
Here you can see how a woodpecker is diligently hammering a frozen piece of bread with its beak.
fascinatingly odd little creatures they are 😃 i don't think we have a species of them locally so this is quite an interesting article you posted, thank you for sharing about this! 😊
