These big woodpeckers will not be left without your attention. You won't be able to miss them. Their loud, distinct calls can be heard from afar, and even the sounds of them pecking at trees are quite loud. Moreover, these guys are easy to see. and there are times when you can get close to them.
They are real workaholics, and do not leave the trees until they have studied them completely. Their traces of activity are easy to see, they are trees with peeled bark underneath.
In addition to insects, these woodpeckers are forced to eat berries in winter if they cannot find insects for a long time.

Nice, I can't get this one in frame. One was building s nest close to my house but the are not there any more.
I'm sure its loud in the forest. Is about as big as a pileated woodpecker?
Looked at Wikipedia, they have the same dimensions, but the weight is different. The black woodpecker has more.
