🦉 The European goldfinch or simply the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
- Carduelis carduus (Latin) thistle
What a pity that I don’t see these beautiful colorful birds so often, and I don’t often get to photograph them.
These birds are most noticeable in autumn and spring. BUT they can also be found in mid-summer, when their favorite food - thistles - ripens. In autumn and winter, they raid lawns and fields with thistles and eat the remaining dried seeds.
The birds are gregarious, and large flocks break up into pairs only in mid-spring. I really like their voice, their songs and calls are very unintelligible, but melodic. Similar to chirps, twitters and whistles.
