🦉 The common tern (Sterna hirundo)

  • Sterna stearn, starn (Old English) tern
  • hirundo (Latin) swallow

One day at the end of July I was walking along the riverbank outside the city. Gulls and terns can often be seen in these areas. And I saw this picture: a young tern flew after its parent and begged for food. The parent looked for fish and dived for it. And then, right there in the air, he fed the baby. I managed to capture this in a photo.

The hunting process of these birds is interesting. They look out for fish by flying over the water, and when they see prey, they briefly hover over the place, quickly flapping their wings, and dive sharply under the water to grab the prey.
