🦉 The common redpoll or mealy redpoll (Acanthis flammea)

  • Acanthis in ancient Greek. mythology daughter of Autonous and sister Acanthus; when Acanthis sobbed over the murdered Acanthus, the gods turned her into a bird.
  • flammea lat.: flamma flame, fire, fiery color flammeus

These northern birds arrive in my region at the very end of autumn, around mid-October, when the first sub-zero temperatures arrive. However, the weather can be very unpredictable, and for example, last year they arrived as usual, and we still had a very warm autumn.

At this time they stay in large flocks. And they can be seen in the highest tiers of forests and in the lowest ones. In the upper tiers they fiddle with birch catkins and eat these seeds. And in the lower tiers they eat wormwood seeds or inspect the ground (or snow) for seeds that have fallen from above.
