🦉 The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo)
- Falco phalcōn (Greek), falco (Lat.) falcon; the word falco is derived from falx (sickle, scythe) and means "curved in the form of a sickle", which is associated with the shape of a falcon's wing in flight or its powerful sickle-shaped claws (Gotch, 1981)
- subbuteo lat.: sub below, under, close to.., partly, buteo buzzard
This small predator is the size of a pigeon. I observe them every year in the same place, namely near the forest which is located by the river. In a small area where tall coniferous trees grow, and nearby there is a small meadow. The bird often sits on the top of a tree and surveys the area, or flies in the air catching small birds and dragonflies.
Despite its size, it often chases away kites that wander into its territory. In these shots, an adult bird has hunted and caught its prey. And nearby, fledglings are waiting for food.
