🦉 The brown shrike (Lanius cristatus)

  • Lanius (lat.) butcher; killer (name - for impaling prey on thorns like butcher's carcasses)
  • cristatus lat.: crista crest, cristatus crested, cristatella reduced. from cristatus

Previously, I met these birds every year near the clearings near the forest and also on the slopes of the hills, but then these birds disappeared somewhere.
Despite its size (about the size of a sparrow), this bird is a full-fledged predator.

This bird feeds on various insects, spiders, and of course vertebrates. Such as lizards, frogs, rodents, and birds. The bird received its Latin name "butcher" for its habit of skinning its prey, hanging the corpses on hooks and thorns.
