🦉 The common redpoll or mealy redpoll (Acanthis flammea)

Acanthis in ancient Greek. mythology daughter of Autonous and sister Acanthus; when Acanthis sobbed over the murdered Acanthus, the gods turned her into a bird.

These northern birds live in northern latitudes. Namely, in forest-tundra, tundra, northern taiga. However, with the onset of late autumn, birds migrate in large flocks to the south, and they can be found in any forests. As a rule, I meet them already in mid-October.

During this cold time they feed on birch, alder and conifer seeds. As far as I know, in villages they can even visit bird feeders and treat themselves to sunflower seeds.
They fly back north very early, but there are isolated cases when they can still be seen in April.
