These birds are the harbingers of winter. They appear in the forests of my city just before winter. But they are guided not by the weather but by the date. So imagine their surprise the year before last when they arrived on the 20th of October, and the weather was abnormally warm without a hint of frost.

In winter and the rest of autumn they feed on plant seeds. They can often be seen sitting on birch trees and gutting birch catkins. Sometimes they go down and eat wormwood seeds. In city parks they can occasionally visit bird feeders and feast on sunflower seeds and nuts.
