🦉 The Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea)

  • Sitta sittē (Greek) mentioned by Aristotle and other ancient Greek. by the authors of the bird, something similar to the woodpecker
  • europaea (lat.) European

These agile and nimble guys live in any forest all year round. They can be found in the wild, in city parks, and in autumn and winter even sometimes in yards on feeding troughs. And this has developed a certain friendliness and lack of fear of people in them. They are easily tamed, they take treats from your hand without fear, in some places they even beg for treats from passers-by.

It's interesting to watch how they take food, cut it up (an insect or a seed) and then hide it in small depressions in the bark of a tree or under leaves, or wherever.
Their Latin name is particularly accurate when a nuthatch splits a sunflower seed. The bird inserts the seed into a convenient place, then hits it with its beak like a chisel, splitting the skin, and either eats or hides the seed.
