🦉 The common whitethroat or greater whitethroat (Curruca communis)

  • Curruca is an unidentified bird name mentioned in the poems of the ancient Roman poet Juvenal
  • communis (lat.) ordinary, common.

Unlike other birds of this family, this species, in addition to densely growing bushes, lives in open spaces such as clearings, meadows, and forest edges. In my city, this is a coastal area where there are lawns and a lot of bushes grow along the shore. And also a mixed forest in which there are small fields. There these birds like to settle in raspberry bushes or in old fallen trees.

It is easiest to see them in the spring. There is no dense vegetation on the bushes yet, and it is also the mating season. The male jumps from branch to branch and actively sings a song. At this time, you can even come closer to the singing bird, but at a reasonable distance, without violating the boundaries of the bird's comfort zone. How to find out these boundaries? It is easy to do, just slowly approach, and as soon as the bird starts hoarsely muttering instead of singing, then you need to move back.
