🦉 The spotted flycatcher (Muscicapa striata)
- Muscicapa lat .: musca fly, capere to catch
- striata (lat.) streaky, striped, speckled
Despite the name and distinctive features of the birds of this family, this bird prefers not to catch insects directly in the air, but to look for them on surfaces, lazy hunting.
The bird finds a comfortable perch and sits on it, surveying the area. When it sees prey, it flies up and grabs it, and then returns back to the perch.
If her prey is a winged insect, she first shakes it to get rid of the wings and then eats it.
I met this bird in these photos in a coniferous forest, but they also live in other types of forests. And they can settle near human buildings, in villages.
