🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
- Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
- major (lat.) big

This species is often found in our forests at any time of the year; it is the most numerous species of woodpecker. Males have a small red cap on their heads, while females do not have one; young woodpeckers, regardless of gender, have a large red cap.

Now is the active mating season for birds and you can hear a woodpecker drumming on the bark of a tree. If you are suddenly going to the forest and hear this, here is some advice for you, try to come closer to the tree where the woodpecker is drumming and knock on the tree. Watch its reaction.
