🦉 The lesser spotted woodpecker (Dryobates minor)

📚 Dryobates (Greek) : druos - forest, woodland, batēs - walker, stroller
📚 minor (Latin) - smaller

No wonder this woodpecker is called lesser, because he is the size of a sparrow.
He lives in deciduous and mixed forests, preferring floodplain and wetlands. Climbs on branches and rarely on trunks. And if he sits on the trunks, it is only loose and rotten, where the bark is easily destroyed.

Like any other species of woodpeckers, he is of economic importance. He is useful in that he carefully cleans orchards and forests from pests, roaming around them in autumn and winter. There he destroys the larvae of harmful insects.
