🦉 The Eurasian wigeon or European wigeon, also known as the widgeon or the wigeon (Mareca penelope)
📚 Mareca marreco (port) duck; Marica (Roman mythology) river nymph
📚 penelope Pēnělŏpē, in ancient Greek. mythology Odyssey's wife, mother Telemachus
These small ducks were noticed by me on the lake far outside the city, in the forest. They swam and looked for food , lowering their beak under the water.
As you can tell by her beak, she feeds on plant foods. Namely, green parts and rhizomes of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants. In the first photo you can see such a plant in her beak. They especially love "Ruppia maritima is an aquatic plant species commonly known as beaked tasselweed, ditch grass, tassel pondweed", this is their favorite delicacy, For which this plant was even called "widgeon grass".
By the way, a duck of another species swam among these ducks. Apparently this is a young mallard.
