🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)

📚 Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit
📚 martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March

A very large woodpecker, about the size of a crow. Quite noisy and loud. Throughout the year you can hear their beautiful drawling voices.
They are very hardworking, unlike their counterparts, who do not stay long in the trees. Black woodpeckers diligently inspect the tree in search of food. And then they literally tear the bark off the trees to get to the insects.

And in the spring, when the weather is warm and ants appear, they like to raid anthills and feast on ants. Also in spring you can see woodpeckers drinking tree sap.
