🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)
📚 Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit
📚 martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March
Large woodpecker. It is much less common than the Great Spotted, Lesser Spotted, and White-backed Woodpeckers. I met this handsome guy in a coniferous forest. He very noisily and actively turned over dry fallen leaves, branches and coniferous needles.
I don't even know what he found or lost there. Then he began to peck at the bottom of the tree. It is quite rare when he can be seen at the bottom of a tree, mainly he examines the bark of a tree at a height. In any case, then he climbed up a tree and began to peck at the bark already there.
