I might have to say goodbye to my GPU...

MSI RTX 4070 Ti

The other night, I installed some new and additional case fans to improve airflow since I have noticed my CPU overheating and install some ram at the same time.

Anyway, the reason why I wanted to upgrade my fans is that when I play and record some games it gets really hot to the point that my camera beside it is also overheating.

As you can see from this photo, I only have the included case fans on the side and rear which should be okay in general... but my problem is my room temperature isn't something nice for the pc haha. I like my room to be quite warm and I generally dislike a room with AC because my hands and feet tend to sweat despite coldness which just makes me feel cold even more because now my sweat turns cold lol. It just gives me a lot more discomfort which is why I like warm room - which from my observation is warmer for the average people I meet at least.

I'm also upgrading from 32gb to 64gb since I wanted to prepare multitasking like rendering a video while doing something on Photoshop, something like that or maybe 3d in the future. Not that it gives me error, just wanted to have more memory lol and also at the same time just do this now instead of doing it in the future because I like doing things at the same time - my logic is that I hate doing things again the next time because I might not have the energy or it is a lot of steps and that it disrupts my workflow.

When my workflow gets disrupted, my whole life gets disrupted lol. Like it would be so hard to get back on track... which is also why I and my doctor thinks I might have autism along with my ADHD which is a good combo to have. (No, it's not and it causes a lot more problems than just having autism or ADHD alone)

Ok so what really prompted you to do the upgrades?

I have recently posted my gameplay on @hiddenblad3 which I have planned on having part 2 and part 3 since the game was long. The problem was when I was editing the part 2 and 3, I noticed at some point it starts lagging... HARD. No, not my system but the gameplay recording itself. The mic audio was delayed, my cam was delayed, the gameplay audio was also delayed or everything was not in sync. I tried many times to save it since I can edit the audio and video separately but it literally would just not work. Which is why I haven't uploaded the part 2 and 3 and I also unlisted the part 1 on YT tho you can still see the video on Hive.

Why did it happen? I had no idea. When I was playing, there was no problem aside from the fact that I felt the room get really hot haha.

I checked the OBS report logs (or crash logs?) and it said that the cause was the GPU. Which kinda baffled me since there was no problem or glitches while I was playing.

Well, OBS was already crashing back then but I couldn't figure out the problem either... I didn't know the logs exist haha so I just thought it might be a software or settings problem. So I didn't really think much of it.

Recently though, I have noticed that when I render videos, it would only render halfway despite the program saying it has exported successfully. When I play it, half of them is empty. And yeah I'm rendering using my GPU.

I still didn't really think of it that much but looking back yep those were really signs that there were problems with my GPU that I just dismissed.

Any stress tests?

Actually, none... Haha I don't know!!! I've never really done those tbh. I've always assumed products I have are good since most of the time I got effective products. I can only remember 1 or 2 instances of defective products before even on the most expensive purchases I have.

So I've never really tested the GPU and stressed it that much since currently I'm not yet doing anything very stressful for it since I bought it last year. Because I went thru the process of ADHD diagnosis and also the diagnosis itself causing me to disrupt my workflow lol. I'm currently getting back on track on everything which is how I caught these problems.

But yes, I have already noticed those subtle problems before but thought they were normal since nothing really major happened until last night. :D

The fans looked really good btw. :D

So when I was done installing my RAM and fans, it was time for me to boot the pc up. Well, there was no monitor input... I thought it was a RAM problem at first since I installed a new one so I tried the previous ones as well and still didn't work.

The VGA light were turned on the entire time and occasionally would have a green light (boot) on.

I did some other tests to my ability like resetting the CMOS, reseating the RAM, changing monitors and slots, nothing. Oh by the way I have an Intel i7 13700 KF which apparently means it needs a GPU to work... but my motherboard says there is a problem with the GPU which is why it won't display.

I called a technician who came by promptly and he did a couple of tests including checking the CPU cooling, changing thermal pastes, resetting CMOS, removing battery, reseating the GPU, checking PSU, etc. RAMS were all good and compatible, CPU was all good. All problems really just point to the GPU not working.

To add, I didn't do anything else to probably cause the problem. We discussed with the technician and it's likely just coincidence and the timing that it stopped working the time when I just installed the RAM and fans. It was working the day before and I didn't check or turn it on before doing these. So we didn't really think I had something to do with it since everything else was fine.

So what now?

DSCF2325.jpg

The only way to really confirm the problem is to test this GPU on other PCs and see if it works there and also maybe try using other wires or something. It is true that my GPU slot was defective but right now we are focusing on the GPU itself as the problem since I also experienced those problems mentioned above before.

Well I can try taking @acidyo's GPU and put it on my motherboard just to confirm it's my GPU but I didn't wanna risk it haha. I'd rather have someone else do those, someone who knows exactly wtf they're doing.

So we're going to send this to the store we bought them from so they can check and confirm that's the problem and if so then I'd have to buy a new one which sucks.

Anyway, at this point hopefully it's just one problem / one defective product so I can just replace one part instead of most parts. I'm really not gonna be surprised it's the GPU at this point because the previous problems point to the GPU so yeah.

Many thanks to @demotry for helping me out with information. :D. I'd do those stress tests once it becomes okay for sure just so we can really tests the products and so I can return it on time.

This unfortunately is out of warranty now because of my probably not a big deal mindset despite the problems showing up earlier but yeah it's a lesson learned to really test the products so I can return/exchange on time.

What do you think?

Maybe some other Hivers who are expert on this will be able to give me some ideas on what happened? We kinda took out electrostatic discharge as a possibility since my room is humid af and some other things too.

But yeah I might have disregarded or missed some details so let me know what you think!

And oh I have an MSI 4070 Ti and looking at 4070 Ti Super to replace it since I don't really need or want to upgrade to the latest GPU at the moment but yeah if you have any suggestions on which brands to get that would be nice! :D

Sort:

64 gb would do better. I also face some problem with my desktop, seems the cpu is super silent and gpu not in operation though my desktop is too old for the issue and warranty has expired a long ago! Good luck!

So much better for sure! Tho not sure if I should use 4 sticks instead of 2 and just sell the old ones 🤔 thank you! Hope you can find the problem and solution to that but be careful not to make it worse if ever :D

Thanks for your suggestion, I will consider it carefully. Have a nice day.

hayyy. silicon lottery.

it's too bad that it's out of warranty.

gpu nowadays have a dedicated video encoder which is different from the part that is used to run videogame graphics.

sighh.. silicon lottery. hope you get a better one.

True, I ran out of luck I guess haha.

Is it still in warranty?
If so take it back and have the shop test it.

Already out of warranty but good news is, we took it to the shop just to have them test it on another pc but they said they can still take it and there is still a chance it gets covered with the warranty depending on the defect. I guess what that means is if they can find it has been faulty since purchase then they can replace or repair it for free. :D

How strange is it that both you and Acid have GPU issues at the very same time? Guess the environment is at least partly to blame, certainly heat and humidity don't play nicely with electronics. The 4070 Ti is a really nice GPU (we have one 😁) and I'd go for the same brand as your mobo. Good luck getting your pc up and running again!

I am suspecting mine was already faulty on purchase, just wasn’t faulty enough for me to be alarmed haha. Acid’s GPU is quite weird as well, we have yet to test and confirm which ones have problems but it could be the monitor or the monitor cable which is easier to test so we’re gonna do that first. His room is pretty cold and less humid than mine but yeah hopefully it’s not GPU problem for him. Thank you! Thankfully the local shop has the GPU i like and the store where I bought the old GPU from took it in and said they will test it. There’s also still a chance that they will cover or replace it despite the warranty being out so hopefully they repair it then I could just sell it haha

Not really an expert when it comes to technical problems but I hope ma resolve na soon. Ang sakit sa bangs if there's a problem but can't find an easy solution for it. Yong you have no other choice but to just replace it which is more expensive for sure and a hassle too. Aguyy

We bought a new GPU and my pc now works. So we can confirm it's really the GPU and not something else at least, cos if it was something else that's gonna be another problem! :D Thankfully one of the shops here has the one I like haha

MSI..

it happened the same to me years ago, gpu dead. black screen with no input from it...so prolly same for you

!PIZZA

Haha yeah. It sucks when that happens all of a sudden!

Yep suddenly for me too, the early morning I was playing then after lunch dead for good 😕
