Dear Mr. Paul,
I thought to write this to you because during our therapy sessions, you have always wanted me to document my train of thought. So I'm writing this to see if we could talk about this in our next session. Maybe it has a deeper meaning. Ok, here it goes.
Is it weird that I'm a cat person or does it say a lot about my personality?
Cats are just ridiculously cute. The cat specie, whether it is the majestic Lion with its sun-kissed mane or the long legs of a Cheetah or the enigmatic Black Panther, has always fascinated me.
Now despite this fascination, I had never really given a second thought to the house cat. I always admired wild cats but never the one that I wasn’t terrified of owning.
Prior to now, the regular cats had seemed ordinary and I instead fancied a dog. I loved the tenacity of a Rottweiler, the smartness of a German Shepherd and the beauty of a Husky. No love for any dog I can put in a hand bag.
While I can say I still love to own one or more of the aforementioned canines, I have recently found myself leaning towards getting a cat. Whenever I say this, people around me get weirded out. Maybe because it has an eerie look, or because of the sociocultural perception of cats or maybe because movies have made owning a couple of felines something a lonely old woman would do.
Obviously there is a huge disparity between cats and dogs in terms of attitude, the care required, food type and many more and I don't think enumerating them would make this an easy read but I’d love to talk about one. Their want for attention.
I won't lie, I've never owned either. I always see them from afar and have always hoped to have one but mitigating factors like lack of time, lack of funds and a desire to be responsible only for myself amongst other things have somewhat dissuaded me from pursuing this peripheral desire.
From what I've heard and read, dogs love attention and seek it a lot, while cats pretty much act on their own and actually doesn’t care much as long as it is fed and properly cleaned, I think. I think I love the attitude of the latter more and I recently started thinking that it might actually say a lot about the relationships I prefer.
I'm sure that took a drastic turn, right? Ok.
Thinking back, all the relationships or friendships that has lasted long for me has been those where the other person has acted aloof in many instances. Those that have had attitudes akin to the nonchalance of a cat have always made me eager to hold on to the relationship.
On the opposite, the person that seems eager to please me has often found themselves out in the cold. Isn't it weird? I don't know if it is human nature or it is peculiar to myself alone but maybe I’d get better with time.
Maybe I’d learn to tolerate people who want my attention instead of given all of me to those who could care less. I'm sorry I'm bothering you with this.
See you on Thursday.
Sincerely, Jacqueline
You may be surprised to find that cats can be every bit as wanting of companionship as a dog does. I have two, the one is never far away from me. It's rare for me to move from one room to another and she's not at my heels. The other one generally does her own thing until she wants attention and then she demands it.
Exactly. They do it when they want to not immediately they see you.
no the youngest one does it when she wants to.. the oldest one moves the moment i do. She stays very close to me and hates when I go out the door. When I'm in the kitchen with my back to her, she will jump on my shoulder to watch what I'm doing.
I want to say that you're living the life but I kinda feel like some days you get absolutely infuriated by them. But I can also sense by the way you sound that you love them.
I'd love to pictures of them. That's if you don't mind. So I can dream of when I get mine.
I've always seen dogs and cats like children who never grow up. So, yes, some days they can be infuriating. Hobo likes to start around 3am on her quest to get me out of bed. It's not uncommon for me to be up around 5am but 3 is just a tad too early.
She has a brat streak at times and can be incorrigible. One of her little tricks is to tap the edge of a bowl sitting on a nearby table until she gets my attention and then will flip it onto the floor. The deliberateness of the action indicates there is a definite thought process there.
Hobo is on the left, Tramp on the right. Hobo arrived at my door one cold October morning about 3 years ago. She was barely 2months old at the time. I also had two adult cats when I brought her in. She bonded with both of them and then they both passed away the following year within six months of each other.
It took a while for me to get the message just how anxious she was when I left the house. That prompted me to bring in Tramp who had been rescued from a feral mother at about 4 months old.
Her feral beginnings is likely a factor in her being more reticent about bonding with me. I leave her to find her space and show her kindness when she does come looking for attention.
It's nice to see Hobo and Tramp. There traits are obvious by the picture. I'm sorry about the older cats that passed on and I'm sure both Tramp and Hobo came at the right time.
This actually got me laughing. Hobo kinda reminds me of my nephew and Tramp reminds me more of myself.
I'd love to have like a Persian cat or Norwegian Forest cat or Scottish Fold or a Turkish. Have you ever had like any other breed? Which would you like?
For the most part I've had cats of mixed breed. If memory serves me correctly the Norwegian Forest cat is believed to be what the Maine Coon cats are descended from. One of the two adult cats I had when Hobo arrived was a part Maine Coon, she didn't have the size but definitely had their intelligence.
Like Hobo she always wanted to be close to where I was. I have a photo of her laying on me, on top of Hobo. She sat waiting for Hobo to move off me and when that didn't happen, she just parked herself on top of her. It was really funny.
If I was going to have a breed, I'd likely lean toward a Maine Coon. Cats will often choose you. If you're looking at a litter and one of them seems to be more inclined toward you, it's probably because it likes you.
Fawnya was a cat that I got that way. I was reaching to pick up a calico litter mate. As my hand passed over him, he hopped on my arm, ran up and nuzzled at my ear. I brought him home and found I had a very loving cat.
@piratethanos
An interesting take, from a point of view of the feline persuasion...
By the way... if you didn't know, there is an awesome place I know... Not for those dogs, of course. But just a place for cats... because, cats.

Ahahah, same thing here. I can't stand those annoying and noisy little pests.
I also prefer cats. I think they treat you more as a friend instead of an owner.
your first mistake is thinking you own the cat. The cat has something to say about that... she's firmly in charge and you're along for the ride.
Honestly, cats are just an enigma. Its kinda like you are with your friend.
I've had several cats over the years. I"ve found that watching their personality emerge and treating them accordingly seems to work for everyone involved. They do have their own unique personality. So, yes, they are like having friends around, we treat them based on their personality and how we mesh with that.
Oh my gosh! You are really experienced.
Good writing 👌

very fun reeed!, i like a lot <3, thanks for sharing this content!
Se ven adorables. A mí me encantan los perritos
Los cachorros son muy lindos, pero se convierten en perros adultos, la mayoría pierde esa ternura.
Very insightful observations @piratethanos I've noticed these choices within myself, too. Although I've never compared it to romantic relationships, I must say! I think I'd like to have one of each animal, so they could have each other for connection when I'm not in the mood or around to play. That might solve the dilemma... 😄
Remember when you were little and felt dogs and cats always fought, like Tom and Jerry? Lots and lots of YouTube videos have dispelled that.
Well, Instagram says otherwise...lol... There are so many animals loving up on each other, almost makes me want a farm. Almost 😁
Hahaha. Almost huh? You just need a couple rabbits, mouse and a pony. Thanks.
You may be relatively new to Hive, but your writing skill is lovely & hope to learn alot from you.
By the way I love pets as well, In my home, we had about 6 cats at some point & 2 watch dogs. Yeah, I know 😂

hahaha I love this! It's so true; those whose attention we have to work for, we seem to want the most!
I think you can now cancel the rest of your therapy sessions. And just buy a cat. lol
Cheers!
Hahahaha. Can I honestly do that?
