Hello everyone!
Today, I'm sharing a different kind of post. This is a tutorial on how to set up a breakaway community from scratch. You may see that there is a lot of information, but it is easier than it looks. Look at me; I'm not a developer, and I was able to do this successfully. I'm currently running a Breakaway Community called Aliento.
In the video, you will see a how-to:
- Create a community on the Breakaway Community site.
- Purchase a unique domain on Namecheap.
- Set up CloudFlare and learn how to connect it to your domain and VPS.
- Create a Droplet (VPS) on Digital Ocean.
- Install Docker Compose and launch your own platform (Breakaway Community).
This is the Breakaway community that was created in this tutorial: Network States.
As you can see, the whole process can take around 25 minutes, including the time it takes for the CloudFlare account to be activated and the DNS to propagate. It could take a little bit more time, depending on other factors.
If you have any questions, you can contact me on the SPK Network Discord Server. You can find it on our Linktree.

I would encourage people to compare domain registration prices with Cloudflare Domain Registration. For some top level domains (TLDs), Cloudflare are cheaper from the start. But even if initial registration is cheaper with Namecheap, renewals are usually cheaper with Cloudflare. So it makes sense to transfer before Namecheap renewal is due.
Note that you can transfer domains to Cloudflare at any time. And your renewal date is added to your existing date. So you don't lose any cheaper months that were included in registration fees.
I have no connection to Cloudflare. Other than being a satisfied customer.
I would advice against CF for the simple fact that if you register your domain with them, you can't use others for nameservers, and it's HIGHLY recommended to use separate registrars and nameservers in case one has an issue(you can easily move it out that way). I like Porkbun.
Thanks for the info, @rishi556.
I wasn't aware of the nameserver lock-in with Cloudflare. Though, in my case, it makes no difference. Because I have always used Cloudflare for DNS. But I will have to have a think about my situation if Cloudflare fails.
I haven't heard of Porkbun. So I'll take a look at their services.
Yeah, I tend to use CF for my nameservers, and have always stuck with the separate registrar and dns provider basically since I've heard of that. Porkbun is nice and cool, well priced(might not always be the cheapest, but you won't spend more than a few bucks more per year). They do free domains from time to time which is great!
Thank you for the advice. In the video I use namecheap but I will edit to mention that other providers can be used too.
Fantastic advice!
Good stuff I was just checking out the communities that have already been made. Some real potential here as it continues to be built out.
Looking forwards to seeing this build out and other community members being to run their own platforms and make their own changes and upgrades that others can benefit from
It's crazy, man, and it looks so cool. And the process you described is so simple. So any community can have cool websites. The Turkish community is too small for that right now, but when we grow I will do it!
Glad you liked it, man!
Looking forward to checking your BAC.
I would recommend Linode or Hetzner over Digital Ocean. Hetzner wins on price, and Linode wins on support. Or a smaller provider like Privex(https://pay.privex.io/order/?ref=home) or ShiftHosting(https://shifthosting.com/solutions/virtual) or Ryamer(https://ryamer.com/computeproducts).
I used Linode when I started the BlockTunes BAC back when they first got started with it.
Thank you for the suggestion, Rishi.
We will definitely list more options. The original version was with a Namecheap server, but for some reason, I was never able to connect to their VPS on my machine; I currently use a Windows PC. Maybe the firewall.
Digital Ocean was the best solution for me. But I need to try more. I use Privex for my Witness node, but I have friends who help me. I will check the others you mentioned.
It's definitely not a wrong choice. I've still got one service with them and I'm not too desperate to move it.
Ooh wow
I’ve been thinking someday about how to create a Hive community
This is helpful
It’s my goal to have a community on Hive someday
That's a great goal! In this video, we talk about communities:
https://peakd.com/hive-110011/@encouragement/nthgqhtv
@eddiespino Would this also work with existing communities? I already have one and like the idea of a front end for the existing community.
Yes, this also works for existing communities.
Fantastic! I will make an attempt at this over the weekend and report back. Thanks.
Me parte el corazón q tu video fué primero en inglés 😂
Jajajaja, haré uno en español. Pero este en inglés era urgente.
jjjeeeee, that's a good one, it didn't break my heart but it did make me noise, jjjeeee, however, in favor of @eddiespino I'm practicing my English
Awesome tutorial! A well-needed one after the interest shown in the previous post with the launch of the community. Thank you for sharing it!
Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Omg thank you for sharing this info, it's helpful🥰
Do I need to know anything special to upgrade an older installation? thanks
Hey @ura-soul!
Once an update is ready I will make another video to show how to upgrade or update it.
Right now, if you want the current version, I believe that you can use the docker image that you can find on the site.
It’s funny how I have always thought that people create communities just how we create new accounts
Thanks for this!
Yes, you can create a community account on other places like the peakd.com wallet, or on Ecency, but this is a way we have to help with that.
Fantastic tutorial, I love this. It really helped
Excellent information with this tutorial. Greetings.
Ok Eddie it's on
Oh boy, I think I'm going to make an effort to make this happen for National Podcast Post Month #NaPodPoMo. Wish me luck!
