Only Sorrow Remains: Broken Dreams

Broken dreams

Before There Was Love – 1989

          I dreamed a dream…
A life where I was happy.
I loved and was loved.
A gentle lover held my hand
And showed me the way to joy.

Our love gave us precious treasure,
          The gift of sweet laughter,
          The patter of tiny feet…
          Myself, a mother looking on…
My lover, a father smily gently…
Our children dancing joyfully about him.

          I dreamed a dream…
A broken dream I couldn’t make true.
In waking truth I am alone.
The lover who held my hand
Led me only to pain.
My love returned no treasure…

          Only pain and regret,
          Bewilderment and betrayal…
Only the sound of retreating steps…
Myself, a woman alone, looking on…
My lover, a fading shadow, deeping pain…
          Our children a broken dream,
Cutting deep as a knife in the night.

Broken Remains

This is an abandoned home near Buies Creek, North Carolina. From the detritus of children's toys scattered everywhere at the site… in every room… in every tumbledown structure on the grounds… in all the open yard spaces… children's forgotten lives on display… No one with children moves out and leaves behind all their toys under auspicious circumstances. Everything about this site made my heart hurt.

Thank you.

Hi @momzillamc. A lovely dream poem I enjoyed. But the abandoned home is truly a mystery. Looks like it was once a beautiful brick home outside. Maybe there was a raging fire that destroyed the home. Then the owners never returned and decided to relocate elsewhere. To leave toys behind, usually children don't do that unless they are determined ruined.

Won't know what happened to the home unless it's researched. Lovely story and pictures to present with this ruined home that was never restored.

Thanks for sharing this story of the home and your poem. Have a great day and a fabulous week ahead. Take care.

Thank you.

There did not seem to have been a fire in the house. It looks as if it was just abandoned with everything left behind. Then, at some point afterward, someone came in and ransacked the place for anything of value, including ripping the pipes and wiring out of the walls for the copper.

So sad to hear that @momzillanc. I hate vandalism of any kind. No sense in ransacking a house that empty. I understand people always looking for something free they don't own or work for. Hope the family has long moved on to something their lives were destined to enjoy.

The way the house was just abandoned doesn't seem like the family would have moved on happily. No one leaves behind all their children's clothes and toys for happy reasons. There were at least two children's toys left behind – there were boy's toys and girl's toys in detritus.

And, there's a feeling in the place… a weight of sadness and loss about it all, especially inside the house. The structure and the grounds are littered with children's toys and belongings. There was also an abandoned dog pen and rabbit hutch. And, there was a storage building full of stuff left behind that had also been tumbled and ransacked.

Oh my goodness. So sad. But you know what, we'll never know what happened. The thing I do know is that vagrants and homeless people sometimes live in places like that. I once knew a situation such as that.

But the strange thing is the toys left behind. That's under suspicious circumstances there. Life circumstances can be so unnerving sometimes. I just don't want to think the worse of what could have happened to the family.

Thanks for your engagement. Have a good day.

I apologize for my error. Your community page states: "A community dedicated to producing quality content in multiple genres, offering our subscribers a read worthy feed."

I expended a lot of energy and inspiration taking the photos and preparing them, and selecting one of my own published poems and formatting it for visual interest to create the highest quality content possible.

Such a deleterious stricture should be front and center on the community page in my estimation. It also seems counterproductive to have your community on the platform permit the open and unfettered joining of your community on the Steemit platform, then bury such a critical stricture. If you can't post in the Steemit community, you shouldn't be able to join it on Steemit. Otherwise, you invite just such outcomes as I have now been dealt. I hope you will reconsider this action and unmute my post. You have my word I have no interest in ever posting to your community again. In fact, this is another incident giving me pause about even remaining on the platform.
