The night is very windy. coming from the East, the continental wind lashes and everything creaks and bangs. carton boxes flying about.
I am awaken at some point, go out to water a nearby olive tree and toss and turn for what seem an eternity, not being able to go back to sleep.
sadly, it seems to be a trend lately.

the forecast for today is of 30% probability of rain in the early hours of the day, but driving to town in a downpour, feels more like 100% to me.

at least today isn´t carnival and I get everything I needed done with ease.
on the way back it is pouring down again, but nearing home it subsides and I am able to unload the van and keep the materials in the stone house.

on the way out, I remember to take some olive oil home.

it is the last of the 5L. containers that were not full.
each time we take olives to the press, we all end up with 5L. containers that are not full.
this is because we divide the total amount of oil for each trip among us, we are usually 4 or 5 of us and hence the fractions.
after this container, I believe there are still 8 full ones of 5L. each from this last years harvest.
all cold pressed and centrifuged, very high quality oil.
our PH naturally is of 0.3, which makes the oil Extra Virgin.
no chemicals are ever used and all harvest is manual in a traditional manner on a traditional grove (large spacing among the trees, no irrigation.
so even though, we are not "certified" as so, our oil is 100% biologic and of the best quality.
it just involves a lot of work !

here are some fun stats I like to calculate when it rains.
as I do not measure precipitation myself, I use the numbers from the forecast.
so for example, Mr. weatherman has predicted 7.5mm of rainfall for today.

every 1mm of rainfall over an area of 1 square meter is equal to 1 liter of water.

for that matter, the size of our farm is 2.2 Hectares (or 22000 square meters)

so we take the prediction and multiply it by the total area of the farm.

7.5 x 22000 = 165000 Liters of water falling on the farm today !
the results are always hugely sounding..!

this is such a good charge for our aquifers ❤️

our soil is a mix of organic material, being built up by the pioneer plants present and trees and a coarse Granite sand. a mix that filters the water extremely well in rainy conditions, but sadly also dries rather fast in dry conditions. the only puddles that form on the farm is were the soil has been compacted on our access road.
the rest of water is soaked straight down and in.
and thanks to the soil always being covered with vegetation and never being tilled, there is no muddy run-off from the farm, as what we sadly see so often in nearby properties.

to be continued... ! (while batteries last 😆)
thank you for stopping by 🙏
wishing us all a peaceful (and dry) rest of the week.
