Right on! It just takes practice, the more you take down the more you understand how to read the trees. One thing you can do as the trees get larger is cut a face cut in the direction you want the tree to go, a V notch at least 1/4 way through, then the back cut releases the tree to fall. That will help reduce the splitting action like the one tree did on you.

Thanks for the advice! It definitely takes a lot of practice, and I can tell that the more I do, the better I’m getting at reading how the trees will behave. I’m going to try your V-notch face cut technique. Thanks again for the tips!

During the covid times I spent a lot of time watching Bucking Billy Ray's youtube channel and learned A TON about tree felling. I knew a good amount growing up around logging but he is great at showing the nuances and approaches that make things safer and many times easier.
