Adventures In Homesteading (Day 319)

Hello Everyone!

Still trying to get back on track, Monetary gain undermining therapeutic value, A moody morning & Planting more seeds!

Alright, it is a little before sunrise here and if I do not spend some time pecking out my ponderous thoughts on this keyboard now... I will probably delay doing it until another day. One thing that I have figured out about staying on track with the writing (or at least attempting to) is that as soon as I think I about doing it... it is time to focus on doing it immediately before I can find reasons not to!

None of that was much of a problem for me when I only posted to my blog (instead of in a Community) and yeah I actually regret the decision... because against my better judgment I began doing so to gain more curation due to being so desperate for finances at the time. Believe me when I say that I miss the more therapeutic rewards of writing without having to 'stay within the lines' (of said Community's format) but hey I chose to give it a try... and have gotten exactly what I deserve for going against my own better judgment.

Admittedly, I am a bit moody this morning because I did something to my back yesterday while working on stuff outdoors... and as messed up as it is... it literally happened from sitting in a chair that kept trying to tip over. At some point I really should make a level spot to put my damned chair on... because this is not the first time that my back has gotten tweaked due to the chair wanting to tip over while sitting in it... or more aptly put... because I keep failing to create said level spot.

Anyways, yesterday I focused on getting all my newly created 'flower pots' filled with soil... which required hiking down towards the foot of the property with a tote, digging in the bottom of a gulch (where the topsoil from erosion has collected) scooping a bunch of soil into the tote... and then hiking back to my camp with it. I am still unsure if it was really worth the calories that I burned to do that activity... but at least I got a good bit of exercise along the way.

Once I got all the 'flower pots' filled with soil, I planted a bunch of 'bird seed' in them... and then planted two to three black locust seeds in them for good measure. My thinking in that regard is that I have no idea whether or not any of the 'bird seed' is even viable... and by planting the black locust seeds I can at the bare minimum assure that my efforts are not being completely wasted.

Unfortunately, the few 'flower pots' that I planted bird seed in the day before were found by the chickens... and whoa they had a field day plucking the seeds out of them. I think that I either need to be sure that there are no visible seeds on the surface for the chickens to see... or take on the challenge of finding somewhere sunny enough that I can fence in without the fence taking up valuable usable space which yeah is already at a premium here.

All total I have now created eighteen of those 'flower pots' made from number ten cans, gotten them all filled with soil and planted in seeds in them... so I guess that I am off to a good start with all that jazz. I have no idea how many more of those cans that I have... but over the coming days I am going to keep plugging away at that project until I either run out cans or seeds to plant in them.

Well, this is going to be a very short entry because the sun is now up over the horizon... and I have other things to do online before I get outdoors for the day. I hope that most folks are doing well. Ta ta for now or something like that.

Everything is finally starting to turn green again!

Your honesty is always refreshing, Jacob. Hope your back feels better soon

Hey thanks! My back got to feeling better today actually. It is still a bit stiff but at least it is not painful anymore.

How do you prep the black locust seeds? I read you need to boil off the wax coating before planting.

They have a hard outer shell that I guess you could call a 'wax coating' so yeah 'boiling' (it is actually below the boiling point) works. The other method (which is what I use) is to scarify the outer shell by rubbing both sides of the seed along a file. Sandpaper works good also but I like using a file.
