Made my own Sage smudge stick

As long as I’ve been burning sage to cleanse my working environment, I’ve always just bought my smudge sticks - usually on Etsy. It’s not a bad deal, and they last me quite a while.

But this spring I planted four sage bushes. The picture above was taken after they were thinned to make this massive smudge stick.

I’m going to sty how the plants hold out as winter sets in here. If they can survive it, I’d rather let them deepen their roots and come back stronger next year; that way I’d have an endless supply!

But if it looks like they’re going to die as my half of the world drifts further from the sun’s warmth, I’ll just harvest them all and make several more sticks.

I believe I planted two prairie sage and two white sage…or are those the same thing? I could Presearch it, but I’m not that worried about it. If they are different, I can’t tell them apart.

This year was my second attempt at growing sage. I tried with two plants over the summer of 2020, but I didn’t give them enough sun and they died out pretty quickly.

Where these ones are planted, they get the sunrise and all the light until maybe 3 PM…they’ve done very well in 2021. If they die off and are harvested, I’ll probably grow more next year, just because I really like having fresh sage growing :)

I like sage which is a medicinal plant

I know I love the smell of the leaves and smoke, are there other uses outside of burning?

All simply in herbal tea but be careful with the dosage.
I copy paste and translated some info on sage that you can discover.
Go to google or another search engine, noting its name. I like medicinal plants and that is one of them.
How to use sage?
The dried leaves are the most fragrant and can be reduced to crumbs to be infused into dishes with sauces. The fresh leaves can be fried to make sage butter that will enhance roast poultry or pasta dishes.

An aromatic plant, officinal sage, or garden sage, is a plant used in cooking and in pharmacopoeia, usually in the form of an infusion of dried sage. It is a pleasant and efficient way to consume sage, resulting in a strong, fragrant drink. Plus, this is one of the best ways to get all of the aromatic herb's health benefits.

Dosage to be observed
Sage infusions should not be taken for a long time, as it can have neurotoxic effects. Herbalists and naturopaths recommend not to exceed 3 cups per day, 10 days of treatment, and to follow them with a 3 week break.

The European Medicines Agency, meanwhile, recommends not using sage for more than 2 weeks internally and 1 week topically.

Contraindications
Consumption of sage tea is contraindicated in pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Precautions should be taken in people with epilepsy or with hormone-dependent cancer such as breast cancer.

Because of its vitamin K content which increases clotting, sage leaf should be used with caution in people on anticoagulant medication.

Side effects
An overdose of sage, in excess of 15 g per day, can cause certain unwanted effects: nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, loss of attention, dizziness, etc.

For the little story

Very interesting! I’ll have to look more into this to see what effects/benefits there are to consumption, but I am with you there, I love medicinal and edible plants!

Thank you for the information!

It is a very interesting plant for its medicinal properties. Thank you for your pose, its giving me consideration to replant in my garden

That’s awesome! I’d love to see them if you decide to do so!

yes of course you live in which country?

Thanks for sharing

Of course! It’s been really fun sharing my life experience on the Hive blockchain, and I really appreciate that you checked it out!

Yeah making your own smudge sticks are great. I did it for the first time this year too. In fact, I had to bring my herbs indoors when it got cold and just pruned off anything that was already drying out and made blended smudge sticks with basil, oregano, and rosemary too. Smells so good! https://www.instagram.com/p/CU5vfy2qDK4/?utm_medium=copy_link

That’s awesome! I also love the smell of rosemary - I’ve considered doing something like this, but haven’t actually done it yet. Thanks for sharing this, I’m going to hang onto it!
