Tomatoe Growth Update!

Hey Hive Fam! I wanted to share a quick update on how our tomatoes are growing.

You already know that I have uprooted the rest of our garden. We had way too many worms and the rabbits and birds demolished all of our green produce. I focus on the fact that we were still able to enjoy some of it before it was all over.

Our tomatoes have grown quite a bit and we are even starting to see some red come in…

That has been really exciting to watch. My family is looking out there everyday to watch the transition of color.

Here are some more but they haven’t started the change yet. You can see how well they are doing though…

Yay! Let’s hope we can keep going in this direction. Maybe soon we’ll be able to grab some to bring them in :D

We’ve had a few storms that have knocked some of the plants completely over. I always get out there as soon as I can to get them back up and supported again. The plants have gotten so tall that their stems are so fragile and easily bent.

Unfortunately there were several tomatoes that fell off the vine due to the storms. Some that were connected to each other I just laid over the plant and kept them out there. We bought a few in and wrapped them in newspaper to see if they’d still ripen (found this remedy online).

What do you do with fallen tomatoes?

I’m not a big fan of green tomatoes or I should say I normally don’t cook fried green tomatoes so I have no clue what else to do with them. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I am open to suggestions!

Well that’s all for my quick garden update. We do still have strawberries growing on the side of the house so we’ll see if any yield before the Summer is over. I’m fine either way since I used this year as a practice and trial time for gardening.

There is a lot of changes we need to make before planting another one. I refuse to plant anything until we are able to build our own raised beds where I can better organize and keep track of the plants. I think it will be easier to protect them this way.

All photos are my own and were taken with our Cannon EOS Rebel T6.

Thanks for tuning in!

Sort:

Make spicy green tomato chutney with the fallen green ones - yum. Or add the green tomatoes to a spicy Thai papaya salad. YUUMMMMM. But of course, I'm biased. 😊

This immediately calls for a chick-flick "Fried Green Tomatoes" rerun. 😆

That was my first thought as well 😀

Yummmmm! Thanks so much for the suggestions!

I can’t handle spicy foods but I sure could make a mild version. 😄 It’s so funny because my husband and kids can stand spicier foods than me. Maybe I’ll make a spicy version for them lol.

It's interesting to see those tomato growing. Tks for sharing!

It was a pleasure. Thanks for reading :)

Not sure if you guys like heat, but if you do - this is what we do with our green tomatoes - Sambal Hijau

Our version:

Ingredients
Green chillies (a couple of bird's eye if you really like your spice)
Green tomatoes
Onion
Garlic

We throw them into hot water and let it simmer for about 10 minutes
Then we drain, blend with chunks(not too fine) and fry the paste with sugar and salt to taste.

Once cool, we keep it in the fridge, and eat as and when we need some heat with our rice meals.

Here's another recipe I found online :D

Oh wow that sounds yummy. I like the frying with sugar and salt part. I would just have to figure out how to calm down the heat. I can't take it but some of my family can lol.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share the recipe!! 😃

YOu are most welcome
Cut back on the chillies for less heat :D

Got it!! 👌🏽✔️

Hi @crosheille,

I read your post and it is to listen in part to my dad, he grows in the garden of the house, among what he grows, he grows tomatoes, he calls me and tells me how the colors of the tomatoes are doing and tells me about the sizes. The garden becomes one more child.

I have not made many recipes with green tomatoes, I have used them in salads chopped very small.

It's good that you have gained experience to continue planting and harvesting.

Regards.

Thanks so much for stopping by to leave your input. It is very true how a garden is like another child...we are constantly watching after it :)

I am grateful for this experience. I hope the next year we try it we will have even better results ~
