This woman ran back in her house and gave me her own daughter's former textbook after seeing how eager I was to learn and conversate. These small acts of kindness are things we miss in our daily lives, and it means so much more than to us than financial wealth.
One of the best sensations, when a native speaker gives you a hand and helps you with whatever you need. This hospitality is not seen everywhere, it is a great joy that there are still people with good hearts.
I have never visited it, but I would love to. Albania is a paradise and from what you tell, it's a perfect place to start life from scratch. I can see the desire you have to live there and progress, from the bottom of my heart, I wish that these life goals are fulfilled and that together with your beautiful family you can settle in that place. You deserve it.
Blessings Justin, I am praying for you and your family.
Very true, Albania is a beautiful and mysterious country, the people are respectful, friendly, social, and intelligent. The Balkans are a magical place, and Albania particularly, because it was never part of Yugoslavia, and culturally and historically it's more related to Turkey. Give thanks brother, soaking the good vibes up.
Well this would be an extraordinary adventure, buy a good boat and travel from Suriname to Albania, (although I think it can be very risky unless you are an extraordinary sailor). I love the scene you describe of the old man coming down with his flock of sheep, or the old woman giving you a basic reading book. It is those scenes, those small gestures, that make a place embrace your soul and make you one of its inhabitants. I really liked this publication, you don't know how much, I just loved it; and I sincerely hope that you and your family will find that friendly, warm, beautiful, safe and prosperous place that you can call HOME. A big hug from Venezuela.
I think there are tiny motor boats there available for a few thousand USD, so it's a realistic dream. Buying a sailboat and crossing the ocean is way beyond my skill and financial means though. I'm quite happy with 30-minute evening cruises in a tiny boat. The Albanians are truly mystical people, especially ones living outside the capital city. I hope Venezuelans and Albanians can connect one day. The Albanian people lived under closed borders for 40 years during a brutal dictatorship, and they are no longer willing to let a government control them ever again, hence their bad-boy status stopping them from being allowed into the EU.
I love a strong people, and I hope to document much more of the place if I can make it there a second time with my Khmer family. Thanks for the love, hugs and good vibes from Suriname.
Albania looks and sounds great. I hope you manage to make it there and turn things around for you and your family. Your continuous search for a better life is admirable and something I can totally relate to.
We'll be technically in Europe, although entering the EU is probably a bit too challenging for us. You're always welcome for a visit though if we can make it Albania. I hope your Hive break served you well my friend. Welcome back.
I have never been to that said of Europe. I don't doubt that it's beautiful and intriguing to visit / live in. Would love to meet up in the neat future. Just know that your family and you are always welcome in Portugal too.
My break served me well although I almost got back into it way too much way too soon.
Welcome back!! The Balkans and eastern Europe are very affordable to travel in, and receive much less tourists than western Europe. I think this makes traveling and seeing the local culture in a more authentic way much easier.
You are one of the bravest people I know. I can't believe the risks you take to find 'home' for your family, definitely taking the long way around with some trials upon the way. I hope Albania is what you're looking for! Else, it will be an adventure too.
Aww shucks..... got me blushing again. We definitely have some tough choices to make right now. We might have a way to the USA within 5-6 months from here, but if we go to Albania, it will take a couple of years because we'll be in a different visa category.
Biggest problem is we dislike it here so much we're not sure if we could survive another 5-6 months here with sanity intact. Then to imagine living a western lifestyle for two years, then moving to the USA for three years, turning our back on a lifestyle we embrace so much for 5+ years, tough call.
I keep thinking a couple of years in Albania is much-needed, and it could end up a forever home. I love it enough there that I could settle down and tend to my olive trees there. Thanks for the good vibes, stay tuned...

You've got to come visit if we go. You can easily get an Albanian e-visa or Suriname citizens get visa-on-arrival in Serbia. We could go meet you in Serbia and create some adventures there too.
Me too, so much content to share that I didn't document on my previous stay there. I love the fresh chamomile flowers sold on the street by old ladies. Also, nearly every block has an herbal medicine shop. The Albanians only user modern medicine as a last resort, and the average citizen is quite knowledgeable in herbs. Bless up from Suriname.
