Who loves relaxing on a bed of nails? No? Ah I love me a bit of discomfort. Pain means you are alive.
I've wanted a Shakti mat for a long time, and the Black Friday bleed into early Christmas sales was hard to resist for me. Besides, they promised it would get here before Christmas and my hip tendonitis has me reaching for painkillers, which the Shakti mat promises to help with.
The idea is that when you are in pain, the body floods you with endorphins - hello natural pain relief. It's basically acupressure - whilst the ancient yogis thought lying on a bed of nails helped stimulate pressure points and promoted relaxation, the mats a little more light and portable. Sure, it sounds like torture, but people swear by it. The mat has thousands of small, very sharp spikes designed to press into skin. This encourages blood flow - your back goes VERY red afterwards - which relieves muscle tension, and triggers the body's natural pain-relief mechanisms. I gave it a go last night and it seemed to work. Perhaps it's merely the fact you lay on it for twenty minutes without doing anything. At first it's super painful but after a few minutes it feels kinda warm and the pain changes. Apparently the more you do it the quicker the pain relief response.
I quite liked going with the original company, though there's other acupressure mats out there. It was founded in 2007 in New Zealand, inspired by traditional Indian practices, and the owners focussed on sustainability and fair trade as part of their business plan. Each mat is handcrafted in India by women who are paid fair wages, and there's even a little tag on it with the name of the woman who made it.
I also like the underside. It'll be rolled up and I'll put some string around it. Unfortunately it didn't come with a bag, which would have been a bonus to be honest.
I'm so keen on the Shakti mat I'm taking it on our trip to Tassie. Jamie can have the hammock, I'm having the bed of nails.

You crazeeeee woman hahaha. This looks like torture!!! BUT.... I know that it is probably exceptionally good for you. How the heck do you get on and off without hurting yourself?? I'm glad you are finding that it provides relief and healing for your body. There is always a simple natural route, right!! I wish more people would look at the healing power contained in nature and within our bodies. I have been doing a fair bit of research lately for my dad... mostly nutrition-wise... as he has just been diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma 😔. But, it's amazing how the body can respond when given the right nutrients... It does, however, take individual acceptance and commitment to the protocols to see things through and to give one a fighting chance. My dad is still reeling from his diagnosis and not wanting to talk about things much. I can only share information with him and then honour the choices he makes over his health and support him as best I can. I bought him a slow masticating juicer for Christmas and my sister (who he lives with) is going to be juicing regularly for him. I hope you had a peaceful Christmas, my lovely. Sending much love xx

Honouring his choices and holding space is definitely your job as a daughter. It's his life til the very end even if it's hard for you to accept as well.
I'm so so sorry you are going through this - I can empathize whole heartedly given my Dad's journey and recent death. I was lucky to have a lot of time with him before he went and that was the best thing ever. I'm crying writing this as it still hurts to remember the pain he was in and how unfair it is that this disease - well, is.
Has he got a treatment plan? I'm sure your healthy juices will keep his body as strong as he can so his immune system can help out. They say exercise is good too.
Much love and strength to you!
Oh this looks so cool! I hope there's an update once you've used it a bit more, I'm really curious what your take is. Seems like sound logic to me (though I imagie it's a bitch to step on).
P.S.: yes! Pain in a reminder that you're still having a go at it. 💛 I hope your hip feels better soon.
I bloody love it. I've even taken it travelling with me. It really helps me relax my muscles!!!! The hip thing is really hard work tbh. Struggling but also being brave and resolute!
You are. I know you are <3 and may you continue to be those things for a long time to come.
Well, that's different. Let us know if the hip improves as a result...
I'd hope but I think it just provides some muscle relief...
I've never tried the acupressure mat. My grandmother told me about it a few years ago after a trip she had taken.
I have to say I'm pretty curious and I think that's something I'd like to try!
I really like the fact that the name of the person who assembled the carpet is written on the label. I like things well done (which don't come from mass consumption) . And that little label means a lot to me!
Yes there's definitely good ethics behind the original acupressure mat!!

It's akso good for the person who has severe arthritis. Hahahhaha
Do you use it for that?
I don't have any tool like that but when I have I look for something pointed to step on such as rocks or something rough.
