Fighters During Harsh Rains 🌿 #gardenjournal

In a previous post I had mentioned the constant rain in my country having a negative effect on crops/agriculture, with staggering prices on the little available fruits and vegetables. Even the little variety that we have in our own garden has been affected by the rain and yet I'm still fascinated by how the plants are fighting through it all.

Take for instance the bitter melon plants, of which the petals have gotten a yellow color, because of too much water in small time frames. They have barely gotten a chance to "breathe" and still the plant sprouted flowers, out of which I've already seen two bitter melons come out. One "large" one and another's a "baby" bitter melon. At vegetable vendors we've seen a lot of small steeped priced bitter melons - they keep saying "because of the weather" - and even the ones at my parent's had gotten yellow. Still I want to wait and see how much it'll grow before harvesting it. The day I see a little bit of yellow, I'll pick it and of course with the 'baby" I'll just have to wait.

Another "fighter" in our garden has got to be the thyme. The "mother" of this herb is grown in a pot and almost died out, so we saved a twig and planted it directly in the ground and one day someone came to visit us and stepped unknowingly on the twig 🤦‍♀. Luckily my partner saw the twig bending and rearranged the soil around it and then the rainy season - with constant rains for days - started, which halted the growth of the plant and yet it stays firm despite constant water and heavy winds. We even see new petals forming.

And then we have the okra plants. They were so small and delicate when we had first received them in cups, until we planted them directly in soil right before the rainy season had started. As small as they were they gave us two okras and even through the harsh weather they keep blessing us with that slimy goodness.

Ooh strong plants! My worry here is always the opposite: I have lost a lot of baby plants due to dry summer heat in the past. I hope your plants stay healthy and give you lots of joy! :)

Yes, it's different in other parts of the world and if it isn't the heat or rain, then it's the snow 🙈.
And hope you're not too late with yours, so you could enjoy the fruits of your labor soon; literally haha

Thanks for sharing, sucks the mellow hasn't gotten time to dry up, We had this issue year last year with our pumpkin.

Did you know hive now has a community designed just for gardening.

We are working to build the #1 vegetable & Fruit gardening community here on hive.

Please use this link to get to the community. If you would like to find out more from contest to post promotion please join our discord.

And I enjoyed writing about it; how nature amazes me every time. Ah yes, pumpkins are growing like crazy here. My parents and those of my partner have/had a pumpkin plant and they gave everyone they know and still had some left. We even had to decline, because we still had some in the freezer and tried a lot of recipes. Of course they could've sold them, but we are more into sharing what we have plenty of and actually plant for "own use" 🙈. Of course we could also donate, but not yet a regulated system in place to do that.

Wow, hahaha I went on and on 😅 when typing.

Thanks for letting me know about the community. I'll definitely check it out 👍.

I agree we grow so much more fruits than we will ever eat. We like to trade them with friends and neighbors that grow other stuff.

We have a good bank we donate to if we still have to many.

No problem Hope to see a post soon 😃

Definitely 👍. Hope we have a regulated food bank here also.

You have a nice garden there! Plants are real fighters and it's great that they have survived a lot of rain in your country...

Nice pics!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

Thank you... Still in it's early stages; we want to do so much more haha and yes they keep surprising me in good ways 😁.

Oh and thanks for the compliment. I use my Xiaomi(Mi) Lite 8 phone camera. I don't know if Chinese phones are available in your country though, but they really have very good camera's if you know how to work them.

Yup! I have Xiaomi Redmi Note 8... All photos from my Actifit reports (@ph1102.ctp) are taken with that phone... It works great!

We also had too much rain over summer and that wrecked the vegetables

That's really unfortunate. Luckily we had some in pots and we're happy that they are fighting through it all.

Part of gardening is battling with the weather, right? Sorry to hear the strange weather is affecting market prices and I hope your garden grows well to provide for you. I always find thyme such a hardy little herb!

Yes, battling weather and other organisms, but it's all part of it and the end results far outweigh the drawbacks and thank you, we hope so toon soon.
