My wife and I were in the centre of Canberra waiting around for a guest artist to arrive recently... and we had just finished attending a different concert, and there was time to kill in between the events. We aren't often in the Canberra Civic area, and the place has changed LOTS since we last lived here... so, we didn't really know where to sit away from the Canberran winter chill...
... but we did walk past this place on the way in... and it looked pretty decent! Or at least interesting...
The Space
The Amici Wine Bar and Deli is on the main drag of Canberra, Northbourne Avenue in one of the old arcades that line both sides of the street. As we walked past, it did remind us of the European Delicatessens that we were so fond of in our past lives...
... and taking a quick peek inside, you can see that there are lots of interesting produce as well as neat areas for seating... and most importantly, warmth away from the winter chill!
The Menu
We were only stopping off for about half an hour, so we weren't going to get anything from the main eating menu (perhaps a different time, and a different write up...). So, this cabinet was our menu... lots of delicious looking pastries and cakes just sitting ready for our taste buds! And they all looked pretty good!
The Food
I settled on this Passionfruit tart... and wow, it was amazingly tasty! Firm and thick pudding with a biscuit base... and very tart with the passionfruit taste. Absolutely a stunner!!!
Meanwhile, my wife had a carrot cake... again, quite rich and filling... with a pecan caramel overlay on the top. Beautiful stuff!
... and of course, two flat whites. Great coffee as well! Wow, it seemed like you couldn't miss with your orders here!
Our guest did eventually arrive early, and he also ordered a Cannoli which was also top notch, and he said that he had eaten pizza here before and that it was also one of the best meals that he had had in his life! So... big call, but definitely looks like Amici will be a place that we will be revisiting often!
The Experience
Warm, friendly staff... with warm cozy atmosphere. Lots of great food, amazing coffee... and lots of interesting produce as well. I can't wait to revisit to try out the proper meals!
