Dim Sum Delight: A Flavorful Feast at The Dim Sum Place

in Foodies Bee Hive3 days ago

Last night, I felt like rewarding myself with a nice dinner, and there’s a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try. The place is called The Dimsum Place, and they serve their take on Halal dim sum and noodle dishes. It’s located at the intersection of North Bridge Road and Jalan Sultan Road.

The restaurant has a striking design that sets it apart from others in the area. If you happen to pass by this road at night, you’ll easily recognize the place from afar. With its bold orange color scheme, you might even feel drawn to it—just like I was when I found myself stepping through their doors last night.

North Bridge Road is one of the best spots for a photo walk and a great place to find something to eat. A wide variety of cuisines is available, and most of the restaurants are Halal. This means they don’t use pork lard or other pork-related products, which I find makes the food a healthier option.

On a Friday night like this, I often treat myself to something comforting and rewarding, especially after a week of hard work—even though the 1st of January was a holiday. I was debating between a burger, pizza, or, in this case, some delicious dim sum! It had been a long time since I last had dim sum, so it felt like the perfect choice for the night. Plus, I’d recently had a burger, so opting for something lighter and healthier like dim sum seemed like the better option.

The restaurant has a nice, warm vibe. The color scheme contributes to it, but I think the friendliness of the staff also plays a big role. It offers both outdoor and indoor dining areas. While the outdoor seating looked fine, I preferred dining inside. The place was almost packed, with only three tables left, so I was glad I arrived early. Otherwise, I would have ended up sitting outside.

As soon as I was seated, the staff handed me a menu along with a piece of paper displaying a QR code I needed to scan to place my order. The restaurant's interior features a modern Oriental theme, which extends to their ordering system. I think this method is quite efficient, as it reduces the workload for servers by streamlining the process of taking orders and delivering food. It’s a smart innovation in ordering systems.

I chose two items from their traditional menu: the Chicken Wanton Noodles and the Steamed Chicken & Shrimp Siew Mai.

For the Chicken Wanton Noodles, I opted for the dry version.

I love how they separate the noodles and toss them in soy sauce, fried shallots, and a drizzle of oil. The wantons and soup are served in a separate bowl, which I really appreciate. The soup was tasty and full of flavor. One thing I especially enjoy about boiled wantons is the texture of the skin—it becomes soft and delightfully slurpable!

The steamed siew mai was also a delight. While there’s a fried version available, it’s not something I’d choose because I prefer every aspect of steamed dim sum over other variations. To me, the traditional steamed style is the perfect way to enjoy a dish like this.

Since this is a Halal version of dim sum, the wantons are made with chicken, while the siew mai is a mix of chicken and shrimp.

The homemade chili paste and oil truly elevates the flavor of the siew mai. I did a little taste test, comparing the siew mai with and without the chili, and found that the one with the chili paste/oil was on a whole new level of deliciousness. The chili paste had a strong kick and was flavorful—I enjoyed it so much!

One thing worth mentioning is that their kitchen is fully visible from the dining area. I believe the restaurant wants to showcase not only how impressively clean their kitchen is but also how they prepare and cook the food. I really admire places like this because they put extra effort into maintaining kitchen cleanliness and staff hygiene. It gives me confidence that the food I’m consuming is prepared thoughtfully and in the best possible way.
