Berry Fresh Fruit Salad

I always believed that berries don't do well in subtropical regions, but I was wrong! We tried growing Strawberries a couple of years ago, but we have a problem with pesky monkeys raiding the garden for anything edible. These strawberries actually managed to start ripening while the papaya trees were bearing well. The monkeys got tired of only eating papayas, and soon spotted the gorgeous little red berries!

Our two magnificent old papaya trees had the sweetest and most delicious fruit.
The birds ate the fruit right at the top, then it was the monkeys turn, and lastly us humans. There was plenty for everyone!

They eventually fell, one after the other.
Papaya trunks are hollow, and with continuous rain they started rotting; age also must have played a factor.

Back to berries, thankfully there's been an abundance of Blueberries and Strawberries in our fresh produce markets, and they're surprisingly affordable this season.

I've been using them when making muffins, Pavlovas, on my morning cereal, and eating berries, instead of a chocolate bar, way healthier I would say!

I bought gorgeous ripe papayas and bananas which are grown in Kwazulu Natal, where I live. Those are the base ingredients of all my fruit salads. I then add whatever fruit I can lay my hands on; apples, oranges, kiwi, pineapple, passionfruit, and berries of course!

For today's fruit salad I only had:

  • 2 papayas
  • 2 bananas
  • 1 orange
  • 1 Lime
  • a handful of Strawberries
    And
  • Blueberries

Simple ingredients, diced and cubed, to make a deliciously fresh fruit salad!

The easiest way to cube papayas is to halve them and cut them while in the skin, then scoop them out with a spoon or a knife.

The fruit peelings are thrown down the bank on the side of our property; the monkeys don't mind our leftovers! What they don't eat, simply goes back into the ground so there's no wastage.

Fruit diced and mixed in a large bowl, almost ready for serving.

I added lime slices, and a couple of Nasturtium flowers, and garnished it with Fennel.

Anyone for a bowl of delicious fruit salad, bursting with sunshiny goodness?

Whatever fruit is on hand either into breakfast with plain yogurt or a fruit salad, tops!

Papaya with lemon juice another yummy treat.

!LUV and thanks for your kindness.

So nice seeing you back Joan, despite all the turmoil you're still experiencing🤗
I miss having pawpaw trees in the garden, thankfully I'm still getting nice ones from my veggie vendor.
I hope hubby is showing some improvement.
Don't forget to take care of yourself too ❤️

I'm not back, simply had an afternoon off and found it wise to pen down explanation of what is happening this side for the many who don't belong to smaller circles.

Pawpaw is one fruit no one in the family eats, unless I make fruit salad. I enjoy them, never planted around the homes here for some strange reason. Guavadilla should bloom again in February which we all enjoy!

I don't know why I don't have a granadilla in the garden! Guavadillas are even nicer!
PS I've been nursing an allergic reaction to a spider bite just above my ankle since Monday, started forming blisters, turned into a bacterial infection, looks awful. 3rd day on antibiotics, hopefully starts improving tomorrow.
Thinking of you, Rob and the family❤️🙏

You're welcome dear @lizelle

This salad is delicious. Good recipe!

wow. The first picture is an explosion of flavors, all the fruits that are there are delicious, here in Venezuela they prepare something similar, with lots of orange juice, and it is called Tizana.

I am very loyal to papaya, I love it, besides it is very good for the stomach, many years ago I had a stomach problem and eating papaya helped me a lot to heal.

That's good to hear about papaya as I'm having issues with my stomach, need to eat it more regularly then!
Thank you for your nice feedback and the useful info @lanzjoseg

Yes, preferably at breakfast, and if you make smoothies, it is sugar-free.

I eat them almost every day,

Here in Venezuela they also prepare a papaya smoothie with some seeds, it turns out that the seeds are very good for deworming the intestines.

Hello @lizelle your fruit salad looks so appetising and refreshing. I've tried growing papaya trees in the past, only find the monkeys destroy them before they bear fruit.

We had a lot of mulberries in our previous garden, even the dogs use to eat them.

Trying to grow some herbs in my tiny new garden, being close to the sea, the soil is very sandy, it looks like the plants actually like it.
Thank you for sharing a lovely refreshing post with us.

Hi my friend, our trees were so tall that only the birds managed to get to the top, the monkeys a bit further down, and we still managed to pick enough for ourselves.
I'm glad your herbs are growing nicely.
Looking forward to seeing you sometime 🫠

A special fresh fruit salad for a sunny and hot afternoon. You have combined the colors very well to make it more beautiful.
Here dear @ Hurricane Rafael left our whole area without fruit trees and other crops in a long time our fields will recover, but we will get them back. I am back. Wish you have a nice weekend.🥰❤️

Thank you dear @mamani, that must have been awful, hopefully they grow back strong and start bearing fruit again!
A lovely weekend for you as well❤️

It is looks like very delicious, unfortunately here we do not have blueberries and if you can get it, it would be very very expensive.
But we have mangoes and another fruits to do something delicious fruit salad.

Hi @galberto, I'd forgotten to mention mangoes! Of course they're super delicious in fruit salad!
Blueberries usually are very expensive but not this season so I'm making the most of it.
Thank you for popping in!

Yeah the mangoes are good too for your health.

Everyone participates in the feast and that's nice.
These are the meals I prefer... my mouth is watering.

Warm greetings from Havana, @lizelle. 😇

Thank you @nanixxx, perfect dessert for summertime!
Have a lovely weekend further <3

You are most welcome!

What a delicious way to enjoy the bounty of your garden! 😋

Fresh fruit salad always is super refreshing, thank you for stopping by @curamax

That looks a delicious fruit salad Lizzie, I thought strawberries grew almost anywhere.

Fresh fruit salad always is good, Ed. We see Strawberries here, but not in abundance, it's Blueberries and other berries that I've not seen in our region.
I hope you and Mrs. T are having a good weekend🤗

Omg yum.its hot today so I must check my raspberries. And it's mango season too. Love this time of year for the fresh fruit. I have heaps of limes .. I wouldn't make a fruit salad or even a smoothie without them!

You're so lucky to have raspberries @riverflows! All the gorgeous soft fruits are coming into season now, I just love it. Peaches, plums, litchis, and mangoes as well, they're sooo good in fruit salad!
Summer's here with a bang!
