A Wisconsin Cast Iron Story : Hot Dogs Seared in Butter

With the Green Bay Packer game on this afternoon, we chose to do something fun for dinner. My wife mentioned wanting to boil some hot dogs up for dinner, but I thought that was boring. So I went to the Google machine to look for a simple recipe that would require our cast iron pan. With some good fortune, I stumbled upon a recipe that everyone loved. Easy enough, if you are a hot dog fan.

To start this one out, we cut up a red onion and a few grape tomatoes for toppings. My wife is originally from Chicago, so she wanted to do an improv Chicago style dog.

With those ready, I put the cast iron pan on the stove at medium heat and added three tablespoons of grass-fed butter.

I then grabbed the Organic Valley hot dogs and threw them on the cast iron once the butter was foaming.

I turned each one over every minute or so for a total of five minutes on the pan. I had read the key was to not let them burst, so I was constantly making certain the dogs did not bubble break open.

While these were going, we also threw a few frozen french fries and tater tots in the oven. To add to the easy yet comfortable meal, we also warmed up brown beans on the stovetop.

I took the hot dogs off of the heat and covered them in aluminum foil while the rest of the meal finished up.

Within minutes, dinner was ready to go. Nothing says easy like cooking up hot dogs in butter on the cast iron pan...

My wife went with relish, ketchup, mustard, onions, and tomatoes. I kept it a bit more simple and opted for mustard, onions, and tomatoes.

Butter really does make everything taste better, doesn't it? I even got a few thumbs up from my daughter; she typically won't eat much if I grill hot dogs outside, but she ate one and a half links tonight. I guess we have a winner recipe going forward for the winter!

Dinner for the win! Oh yeah, the Packers for the win too! It was a nail-biter, but the defense managed to pull it off in the end. A perfect capstone for the weekend; hot dogs in butter and a Green Bay victory.

Thanks for stopping by to take a look. I'd highly recommend you try this method of prepping hot dogs if you are a fan of the food. I really enjoy the taste of hot dogs grilled on the charcoal, but this method was excellent. Plus, the cast iron has some good seasoning for the next adventure.

I've only got one word for you.

That looks like an awesome and legit meal for watching the football!

I know, I can't count. You're the accountant.

Me either, lol - time for another career change

The butter was so good with this one; I don't know if I can ever go back from this experience...

You ruined yourself with this legit food. Still, it was a good way to go.

I've been admiring cast iron pans for a long time, but haven't bought one yet. I think it will give a stronger taste sensation compared to non-stick pans.

But charcoal grills are still the best and I miss those days when charcoal grilled, with family gatherings.

Your meal looking great. I can smell it :)

Oh yes, definitely get one! You will not be disappointed! We usually do a few meals in it before I clean out with salt and then put a conditioner on it. My hope is that Hattie can keep with her when she gets older too -

Charcoals are fun; you can't beat veggies or seafood on the grill. It just gets too cold over here in the winter to sit out and grill, so the long wait for spring is on!

The hot dog is an American classic, believe it or not. Hopefully you'll be able to try one some day!
