Hadn't tried oil, but I have a refrigeration style vacuum pump that pulls a really hard vacuum.
Most of the kitchen type only pull 12 to 14, but mine pulls 28.5. Should last a lot longer on the shelf. I make sure the tomatoes are are dry to the brittle point too. No moisture, no oxygen; no problem!
