What really helped on my ATN night scope when I had one was adding a much stronger IR light like "Coyote Cannon" or "Sniper Hog" these really extend the range by 100 yards or even more. I decided I liked the thermal much more, and more happy with the AGM thermal I ended up upgrading to. Several of the trail cams do a good job, but as mentioned, their distance is limited due to the low LED IR light source. I've seen others improve by adding remote IR light sources if around property, etc..
