Will We Enjoy Personalized Movies?

in CineTV3 days ago

There is this trend in thinking that Hollywood is dying... Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But it certainly will change, if it won't die.

It's interesting that Hollywood made us talk about it and its movies or internal "dramas", when I know some of the best films I saw weren't produced at Hollywood, but in other parts of the world...

But it is true, Hollywood's domination probably put other studios out of business or forced them to work with/for Hollywood studios... Maybe it's time they swallow the same pill they've been serving others, and get the film industry decentralized again.

Somehow I believe they'll find a way to survive. Not sure about actors, writers, and the plethora of set people that have been involved in making a successful movie until nowadays. But the corporations around the movie industry? They'll make it, but become something else. There is already talk about AI-generated actors in the future and when people complain, they are reminded Disney had Mickey Mouse long time ago, more recently, Lion King, and so on. The difference is those were animated films, or cartoons as they were called. Will it be different when AI-generated human-like characters will be inserted into movies and made to look and move exactly like us? We will see... Probably not, after some adjustment time.

There is also this idea of personalized movies. This is not a new idea, to be clear. I know of experiments well before the generative AI trend, when a film was created in a modular fashion, and the viewers could select how the movies should continue. At least the ending of a movie was created in different versions in more such experiments, if I remember well.

Ideogram created these potential movie shots...

It looks like the idea was abandoned... I mean, I haven't heard of such attempts in a while, although they might still be around.

Why do you think that would be? My thinking is that people like to be surprised, they don't want control the flow of the action... Even if in retrospective, they might want to make changes to the movie, when they watch it, they'd rather be surprised. If you haven't seen a movie and someone else does and starts telling you about it, and you want to watch it, you immediately say: "Don't tell me anymore, I want to watch it!". You don't want them to spoil the surprise for you.

Will it be any different with AIs? They might automatically know what you prefer and craft a movie to your liking. You probably would watch it, if you'd like it. But I'm not sure... Would they still surprise you? Unless they would be crafted especially to surprise you, in which case, the AI takes the chance of you not liking it.

What do you think?

I don't think personalized movies will hit as hard. Sure, it might be nice at the start but I think the AI will stick to a certain pattern and get old.

I have the same feeling. It might become boring really quickly.

If it can get really surprising, then I'm all for it. I think the AI could know what our interests are and make a movie based on those. Naturally, I tend to lean more into movies created by other people, simply because it's based on their way of thinking, how they see and interpret the world etc.

One other reason why I'd prefer movies as they are now, non-personalized. As you said, you are exposed to the imagination and world view of the creator (which you might like or not, but they will surprise you from time to time), instead of reinforcing your own biases by watching something created especially for you.

Exactly, it's like just getting stuck more in your own world. Better to explore other worlds and have different experiences outside the proverbial box.
