Scorsese is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers. He is a master of what they call sequence shots, his characters are imperfect and for him the camera works in function of his characters. Excellent your criteria to choose this director. It's hard to say which of his films I like the most, but The Invention Of Hugo Cabret is great, a tribute to cinema itself, and perhaps the least violent of Scorsese's films. Mind you, I'm also a fan of the more violent ones.
