my Natural Building Philosophy ~ Finding a Balance Between Sustainability and Good Enough

in ecoTrain7 days ago (edited)

How do you select the most ecological materials for building sustainably?

And what do you do when ecological materials aren't available?

This year I set a goal for myself to share more short form videos about the building of our tiny house. This one was meant to show what we got up to last week and ended up being a little bit of my "natural building philosophy".

This holiday season I came across some opposing attitudes about ecological living. Namely a friend who is strongly against interacting with the forest for fear of destroying it. On the other hand she buys bags & bags of soil for her work in a nursery. And those are plastic bags I might add. I adore her & truly appreciate the work she does but just can't get behind some of her philosophies about what is and isn't ecological.

It gets really complicated when the topic of natural building is broached. We want to live in harmony with nature and personally I don't think I can do that while living in an apartment in the city. For this build we have to buy wood that isn't cultivated in the most mindful way. But, whenever possible, we take the time to mindfully collect the materials abundant in our zone. And that is a compromise I can live with.

You and Jonah are doing a great job with this sustainability project.

Please try to release this feeling of unsureness about posting this kind of content due to potential haters, because your content is very good in many ways. It's both educational and therapeutic in the delivery of information. Your voice is very relaxing and perfectly paced. Anyone who has some negative words in relevance to what you are doing is certainly suffering from a mental health condition called jealousy.

Great job with all of the amazing things you're doing and thank you for sharing this knowledge with us!

Thank you SO much for this thoughtful comment!! I am so grateful for your encouragement and the compliment about my voice. That is exactly my goal, to educate and also help keep people calm. For so many years I suffered from what I call "Eco-Anxiety" and now my mission as a content creator is to share simple ways to live in harmony with Earth through our actions.

Also, I really like that you said "Anyone who has some negative words in relevance to what you are doing is certainly suffering from a mental health condition called jealousy." This made me laugh and is also so true!! Recently I was talking to a friend and my sister about how so much hate from other people that they experience is simply because they are just jealous.

Now I realize that it was silly of me to worry about getting hate here on HIVE, everyone has been nothing but supportive and kind here. So, thank you!!!

I'm happy to know your humor is in good operational order ;D It was meant as a joke of course, but some truth in it... lots of jealousy ridden people that express their jealousy in ways of hateful spiteful "you're not supposed to do that" type of ways... I totally get the feeling.

In my time here as a blogger, the population of bloggers hasn't grown much, and one thing that rings true amongst the main populous of people here is that most of the regulars are pretty talented people who appreciate talent! So you'll definitely get little to no issues on Hive, and anywhere else on the internet? Well just block them if they are negative...

I like to help people, and where I live it's a common philosophy to not help others because most asking for help "are just getting hardcore drugs" ...(I was one of those people once upon a time)... , but what they use it for doesn't matter to me because I think "if I help 1 out of 100 hundred people and the help mattered for 1 person, then it was all worth it..."

It's good to think like that on the internet too in my opinion, because really if your content helps one person but 99 other viewers it didn't, who cares! At least someone benefited right? :)

I love your content and if anyone else doesn't like it then I think they're stupid. I have already learned some things I didn't know about from you and I think you're one of the most talented people on this earth.

Beautiful 😊I enjoy seeing the experiences of others it is a great way to share. Thank you!!!

Thank YOU! it is so nice to hear that others appreciate what I share.

Your balance of mindful building and compromise is inspiring—I love seeing your journey, keep it up!

oh thank you!! It is nice to hear your encouragement. Expect more little vlogs like this one soon!
