Yesterday, after four days of going to the gym, I decided to take a day of rest. I am determined to reach certain goals, like weight loss, improved mental health and muscle strength, but I don't want to turn it into an unhealthy obsession. This is supposed to bring me joy, after all.

I also noticed that my knee pain was back so I thought a rest day would be exactly what the doctor ordered. I will be back on my proverbial bicycle this afternoon/ evening as the day off resolved all my aches and pains.

Yesterday I focused on good eating. So, I am not manically following any fad diet, but I do find that banting works quite well for me. However, as a family if five, its very hard to follow this and very expensive. The idea is to do what I can when I can and just choose healthier options.

I have given up chocolate/chips/cake in bed at midnight, which @zakludick and I had gotten into the habit of this past year (and I believe has contributed to a huge percentage of my weight gain) especially, as a sort of reward for dealing with our kids and all their collective crap πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜œπŸ˜œ Don't get me wrong, I love my kids. Bur parenting three teens is exhausting. I constantly wonder if I am doing a good enough job.

So, yesterday I focused on rest, and eating well! For beakfast, I had my usual oats and banana. But for lunch I indulged in this incredible yoghurt!

There seems to be an outbreak of all kinds of delicious flavors of yoghurt out there, and although I know I should be eating plain unsweetened yoghurt, who can resist these options? I have always been a strawberry yoghurt girl (which is strange because I hate anything else strawberry flavored - maybe it's the fake strawberry taste I abhor) but with flavours like blackberry, and cheesecake and so on, there is just so much to chose from. And they all do wonders for my gut health with live cultures to ensure healthy bacteria are thriving. I need to look after my tummy with all the meds I am taking. And there's no way I could eat plain yoghurt every day.

Last night, we had chicken schnitzels with salad. It was really fun because Zak and I made this dinner together! I even added some boiled eggs to the salad, in place of avos as their price has skyrocketed - as they do every year around this time and become more and more scarce. I love adding olives, but only @merenludick and I eat them. Anyway, back to dinner last night, it was absolutely scrumptious!

It was also for the first time in 5 days, the first night I had a chocolate craving, but I resisted! Yay for me!!

On the yoghurt front, there's a tip my dentist gave me that might help.

I used to drink coffee (and lots of it !) with 2+ sugars in, which was terribly bad for my teeth. What he suggested was make the next 9 cups without sugar, and then the 10th cup how I usually do it. I did, and found I'd "re-trained" my sense of taste, the one with sugar tasted far too sweet, and now I drink (and enjoy) coffee without sugar. Still lots of it, but I get a lot less fillings !

Also, don't ever doubt how good you are at parenting. Yes, it's hard work and stressful. But I've seen the photos you and Zak post, and you've created a good bunch of kids. You should be very, very proud of them and of the way you've raised them. πŸ˜€

I'm happy you listened and followed your doctor's advice and now you can do what you couldn't before.
Nice advice for my friend😎😎.

Well, I still cant do those thing, but hopefully with repetition and just showing up, I will get better

Yeah, that's great advice. Sugar is far more dangerous than people like to admit. Luckily, I actually consume very little. I only have one cup of coffee a day. Thanks to my anxiety, I can't have more :p But otherwise that's it really. I also have a little with my oats, but with the cinnamon and the banana its barely needed.

Thank you for your kind words about parenting. I often struggle... you know ... always wondering when
I am passing on that generational trauma. :/

You have to do whatever helps you health friend, it's all that matters the most at this moment. Thanks for resisting the cravings, hehe.
Just like I did yesterday when I visited an eatery but didn't have the money to get a cheese burger, lol.
Exercise is nice, I'm happy to hear you did visit the gym.

I'm so proud I'm keeping it up. Let's hope I can keep it up in the long term!

Speaking of burgers, we actually make them at home! @zakludick makes the patties himself!

Well... I often do. Sometimes we have patties from a box but the BEST burgers are when I do my own thing!

thanks my friend!!

This post feels so refreshing! It's great that you're focusing on your health goals while maintaining balance and not making it an obsession. Rest days are so important, especially when dealing with pain like your knee. I love how you’re making healthier choices but still enjoying life, like indulging in flavored yoghurts and cooking meals with your partner. Parenting teens is tough, but you're doing amazing by staying mindful of your well-being.

Thanks for sharing your journey!

Ah man, what a lovely reply. You've summarized exactly how I feel and how I'm approaching my plans for better health and a better life <3

I'm a teen myself and I can't imagine how hectic it must be to guide three of me. Well, I'm not too stubborn πŸ˜‚
I can't take any yoghurt. Sweetener and unsweetened, I dislike yoghurt.
Congratulations on resisting your chocolate craving πŸ˜‰

omg ok... try frozen yoghurt! It's absolutely awesome! You'll never look at yoghurt the same way again :)

Oh no.....yoghurt
You can enjoy unsweetened yoghurt.
Cashew are sweet and better off than yoghurt.

Well, little by little you will get there.
But always remember the benefits of healthy diets.

I need to eat yoghurt for my gut health. I don't like unsweetened yoghurt as there are no options for variety. Not all of us can afford to buy the added specialty ingredients off the shelf. Cashews for instance, are ridiculously and extremely expensive. And I am happy to have a bit of sugar in this case as it's probably the only guilty pleasure I'll allow myself going forward. It's definitely better than eating cake under the duvet and refusing to come out. It's all About making good, small changes on a daily basis, but we all allow ourselves a bit of leeway where it's logical. I think one has to take the person's entire diet plan into perspective before criticizing. And the yogurt was freaking delicious. Honey and real gooseberries? - I have no regrets <3

Oh okay dear.
Cashews are cheap here, that's why I suggested it.

You will be fine and you are improving.
Best regards 😊

Ahhhh you've succumbed to sweetened yoghurt!!? Don't do it haha...

I bought an avocado for a treat the other day ... So good.

You know, as I said, my gut health is really important. I won't eat plain yoghurt and as I said in my post, the wonderful fruit variants that are coming out are just wonderful. Loke whole gooseberries, whole blackberries. It's stuff you wouldn't be able to buy and add to plain yoghurt. It would cost so much and I am currently unemployed. I am doing the best I can to look after my health with what I have. I am not a big sugar person and I think having this as my sugar allowance for the day is worth it. Avos are amazing and full of healthy oils. They do not, however, contain the live cultures I need to strengthen and support my gut as I have to take so much medication.

Wow. I think it's really sad how people have zeroed in on the yoghurt story, while completely ignoring the enormous life changes I am attempting to make after facing some incredibly hard battles. Like, thanks for your opinion, but I will continue to eat my sweetened yoghurt and make sure I balance it out. I think its worth it for my overall wellbeing, especially my gut health. Which is why I am eating it in the first place... sigh...
